Hand in your application to your international coordinator at the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University: Sölvegatan 19, Lund, or send an email to: international.facultymedicine@med.lu.se Universitas 21 Health Sciences Group, Summer School in Substance Misuse Studies: A Harm Reduction Approach, 07-18 July 2014, Auckland New Zealand Background to the 2014 U21 HS Summer School Worldwide, the use of legally available and illegal psychoactive substances is associated with a range of poor health outcomes, and negative consequences for families and communities. Costs are incurred by healthcare systems, justice, police and social services. The U21 HS Summer School will focus on the issue of substance misuse and its consequences from a public health perspective. A harm reduction philosophy will underpin the programme, which is one which accepts that many people are unable or unwilling to be abstinent, and puts in place interventions which reduce harm to the individual, the community and society. The Summer School will take an inter-professional learning approach, with students learning in multi-professional teams. The programme will also include a focus on cultural issues of New Zealand Māori and Pacific peoples in the context of substance misuse and harm reduction interventions, and the need for a culturally competent health workforce. Focus Focus on the issue of substance misuse and its consequences from a public health perspective. Students assigned to multi-professional teams, in which they will work for the duration of the Summer School Each team will develop an intervention which they will present to a group of experts in substance misuse issues. Facts Experiential learning. Ten days study, with optional weekend in Rotorua. National and international experts as speakers and facilitators. Focus on teamwork skills. Indigenous populations and other cultural perspectives. For Undergraduates who have completed at least 2 years of study. Dentistry, Medicine, Midwifery, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Population Health, Public Health and Rehabilitation Sciences students. FEE PER STUDENT PARTICIPANT The fee for the U21 Health Sciences Group 2014 Summer School per student participant is $900NZD (approximately USD750). The programme has been subsidised by FMHS at The University of Auckland and the U21 Health Sciences Group. The fee per student participant includes accommodation, ground transport in New Zealand, some catering and some social events. There is an optional tour to Rotorua also included in the student participant fee. Student participants are responsible for all other costs including airfares to and from Auckland, New Zealand, visas, insurance and any other associated costs.
