We are currently seeking a hardworking, dynamic and motivated individual to add to our Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps (NSYCC) team for summer 2015, who has a strong passion for people and the environment. Our approach is always collaborative and team oriented. Program Overview: The NSYCC program was established in 1989 to provide Nova Scotian youth with training and employment opportunities in the environmental field. This program engages community partners across the province to hire students to carry out work that enhances the local environment through the summer months. The NSYCC provides Nova Scotian youth with environmental work experience, an enhanced appreciation of the environment and their community, and develops skills for life-long learning including, team-building and leadership skills, public speaking and community outreach, increased knowledge for future employment and/or education ventures, program evaluation techniques, the ability to give back to their community and their environment, and workplace safety training, including first aid, WHMIS, and Occupational Health & Safety. Position Overview: The community partner for this Summer Intern position through the Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps (NSYCC) will be the Joggins Fossil Institute, reporting to Jenna Boon, Executive Director. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for the Green Landscaping Project, which is a multi-year habitat restoration and enhancement initiative that aims not only to continue to re-green the Joggins Fossil Centre grounds through native vegetation, but also to incorporate opportunities for organic food growing to our site and to the community at large. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for green landscaping (including tending to and planting native vegetation) and developing and maintaining gardens. The successful candidate needs to be enthusiastic and environmentally-conscious, able to participate in physical labour and work with hand tools, enjoy working work outside in adverse weather conditions, and able work independently and as a member of a team. About the Community Partner: The mission of the Joggins Fossil Institute (JFI) is to protect, conserve, present, and transmit to future generations, the world heritage values of The Joggins Fossil Cliffs and to be a world leader in communicating its research and the collections of the province of Nova Scotia, to increase understanding of the natural diversity in the Carboniferous Period. The JFI provides engaging visitor experiences that inspire wonder and build an understanding of the natural world. Duties and Responsibilities: Installing an edible berry patch at the Centre; Installing a second native pollinator garden at the main entrance to the Centre; Install two new raised garden beds at the Centre; Planning and planting the Chef's Garden and Herb Gardens for the JFI Local Food Café; Conducting green landscaping and brownfield remediation by tending native trees and shrubs and pollinator garden plants, mulching and composting areas to continue to establish top soil and to reduce competition. Establishing a system for rain water harvesting and watering gardens will be a key component of this initiative; Assisting with the maintenance of the Children’s Learning Garden at the JFI (including working with local children to tend to the care of eight raised community garden beds); Conduct programming for community outreach and education including designing and delivering presentation for the public and visitors, leading in the delivery of biodiversity and food education programs for weekly children’s summer camps, develop and lead periodic green-landscaping tours (tide and weather dependent) for visitors and tourists; Other duties as required, including occasional beach clean ups, community work days with the local Garden Club, and organizing a “Community Environmental Day”, which would entail facilitating an event that would bring the community to the Centre to learn about an environmental issue of the students' choice. Requirements/Qualifications: Must be legally entitled to work in Canada; Must be between the ages of 15 and 30; Must be a full-time student and intending to return to school in Fall 2015; Is not a member of immediate family of community partner; Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; Ability to work with varying age groups, from children to seniors; Ability to adapt in a fast-paced work environment; Demonstrates interest in future employment in the environmental or ‘green’ sector is considered an asset; Knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint will be considered an asset; Experience with gardening or, and tree planting an asset; Knowledge of native plants, insects and trees an asset; Access to a car and valid driver's license an asset; If you are interested in this position please submit your cover letter and resume, merged into one document, via email to Morgan Book, mbook@clean.ns.ca by May 31, 2015.
