The Clean Nova Scotia Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization that started in 1988.

We are currently seeking a hardworking, dynamic and motivated individual to add to our Nova
Scotia Youth Conservation Corps (NSYCC) team for summer 2015, who has a strong passion for people and the environment. Our approach is always collaborative and team oriented.
The NSYCC program was established in 1989 to provide Nova Scotian youth with training and employment opportunities in the environmental field. This program engages community partners across the province to hire students to carry out work that enhances the local environment through the summer months. The NSYCC provides Nova Scotian youth with environmental work experience, an enhanced appreciation of the environment and their community, and develops skills for life-long learning including, team-building and leadership skills, public speaking and community outreach, increased knowledge for future employment and/or education ventures, program evaluation techniques, the ability to give back to their community and their environment, and workplace safety training, including first aid, WHMIS, and Occupational Health & Safety.
The community partner for this Summer Intern position through the Nova Scotia Youth
Conservation Corps (NSYCC) will be the Eastern Region Solid Waste Management Committee, reporting to Nicole Haverkort, Regional Coordinator for Solid Waste Region 2A. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for developing and presenting written and oral information for a number of waste diversion programs. The successful candidate needs to have excellent communication skills and a keen interest in environmental related programs. This position will include office work and field visits to residential properties, businesses and other public locations.
A normal work week will be Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, however a presentation may require an evening or weekend shift.

The Eastern Region Solid Waste Management Committee (Solid Waste Region 2A) was established in 1996. It is a Regional Committee representing five Municipal Units including the
County of Antigonish, District(s) of Guysborough and St Mary’s and the Town(s) of Antigonish and Mulgrave. The Eastern Region and six other solid waste-resource regions were formed by the Province of Nova Scotia to help Nova Scotians reach waste diversion mandates required through provincial regulation. This Committee is a liaison on all waste related matters with the
Municipal Units, Nova Scotia Environment and RRFB Nova Scotia.
The current disposal target is 300kg/capita/year by 2015. This target includes all waste disposed from residents, businesses and as a result of construction and demolition activities. All Nova
Scotians will have to work together to achieve this goal at home, work and play! The Waste
Diversion Officer through this project will assist us with achieving the goal. Our office is located at the Guysborough Waste Management Facility, 151 Waste Management Rd, Boylston, Nova
Scotia.

Reports directly to the Regional Coordinator for Solid Waste Region 2A;

Review existing waste diversion programs within the Solid Waste Region and target areas for advancement in consultation with the Regional Coordinator;

Develop a communication plan and materials to be presented to residents, businesses and community groups to initiate and advance the diversion of targeted waste items such as oil containers and organics;

Prepare a survey for specific businesses regarding the oil container recycling program, track and maintain data and follow up as necessary;

Create a database of know illegal dump sites in the Solid Waste Region;

Assist with the coordination of the cleanup of at least one illegal dumpsite in Solid Waste
Region 2A;

Develop an education and awareness campaign to be presented to the general public/community groups to deter illegal dumping and burning;

Present programs to the Regional Coordinator and other administration as requested;

Provide updated information and training to specified staff or groups as identified from each of the five Municipal Units in Solid Waste Region 2A to advance program diversion;

Assist as requested to educate the public on waste diversion programs;

Research, collect and maintain current information on waste minimization practices and programs of other jurisdictions including contact lists, databases and libraries required to support the reduction, reuse and recycling of solid waste;

Maintain liaison with staff from each Municipal Unit in the Region and with Waste Facility
Staff as well as the general public.

Must be legally entitled to work in Canada;

Must be between the ages of 15 and 30;

Must be a full-time student and intending to return to school in Fall 2015;

Is not a member of immediate family of community partner;

Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;

Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
 Must have access to a motor vehicle and a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license;
 Demonstrates interest in future employment in the environmental or ‘green’ sector is considered an asset.
