KEY OBJECTIVES:
 Coordinate the delivery of AVI’s communication activities through public relations, all AVI
communications materials and online environments to increase public awareness of AVI as a
leading international development organisation and promote participation in the varied projects
and activities AVI undertakes.
 Coordinate and maintain communication networks to increase AVI’s access to a variety of
distribution channels and ensure the communications goals of AVI, specific projects and
partnerships are achieved, in collaboration with AVI staff and project partners.
DECISION MAKING:
 Implement activities that support AVI’s strategic direction and communications plan in
conjunction with the Manager - Marketing & Communications and internal/external
stakeholders
 Determine direction and content of AVI’s communications activities in consultation with the
Marketing & Communications team and relevant internal/external stakeholders
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Knowledge & Experience
 Relevant qualifications in communications, journalism and/or equivalent experience
 Demonstrated imagination, creativity and flair in communication and/or journalism
 Ability to develop content for a range of purposes, including media, speeches, opinion pieces,
web content (using a CMS) and occasionally multimedia material
 Strong understanding and experience in working with traditional media and online media
networks
 An understanding of contemporary copyright, intellectual property and privacy principles
 Interest in international issues and cross cultural communication
 Experience in monitoring and evaluation of effectiveness of communication activities and
materials
 Understanding of and commitment to AVI’s mission, values and corporate objectives*.
 Understanding of and commitment to EEO, privacy principles and Child Protection
Skills & Attributes
 Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively negotiate and liaise
with a wide cross section of people including partners, service providers and the wider
community.
 Demonstrated ability to conceptualise issues and translate these into effective
communication strategies, action plans and content and the ability to “sell” these ideas to
stakeholders concerned.
 Excellent oral, written and visual communication, writing and editing skills
 A high level of attention to detail and organisational ability
 High level interpersonal communication and presentation skills
 Ability to be self-directed and work well under pressure with changing priorities, multiple
projects and deadlines in a marketing & communications environment
 Demonstrated ability to work in, and positively contribute to, a small multi-disciplinary team

Campaigns
 Coordinate and implement effective communication campaigns that reach
target audiences
 Implement activities that increase awareness of AVI’s brand, programs,
services and promote AVI’s work
 In consultation with the Manager Marketing & Communications, design and
implement organisational messages and activities that communicate AVI’s
mission, values and projects
 Create, commission and package content to drive AVI’s strategic priorities
and partnerships across print and for e-communication channels
 Promote and protect AVI’s brand and organisational reputation to various
stakeholders nationally and internationally
 Prepare communication material for dissemination externally and internally,
including media releases, direct marketing, promotional materials, in-house
publications, information bulletins, customer newsletters, case studies,
research reports, speeches and public presentations, web stories, media
features, etc.
 Ensure all public documents produced by AVI conform to branding,
messaging and style requirements and are shared across the organisation
 Work with relevant AVI staff to develop key messages for communication
tailored to meet the various requirements of AVI’s stakeholder groups
 Develop and deliver communications that respond to market research
activities and emerging issues
 Work with team to develop promotional and media campaigns for key
events such as volunteer recruitment drives and International Volunteer Day
 Create and maintain a network of relationships across a variety of
communication channels

 Work with team to ensure media activities, visual identity, organisational
communication, web content, etc., are effectively supporting and
complimenting marketing campaigns
 Support the management of events in collaboration with the Marketing and
Communications team to support AVI activities, including information
sessions, volunteer and project personnel recruitment, International
Volunteer Day, International Women’s Day and other significant AVI
celebrations

Materials
 Oversee the creation, editing, production and distribution of high-quality
communications materials, including content for e-comm’s and print
products promoting AVI, it’s programs and services
 Produce content for AVI publications, supporting material and media
including press, magazines, e-comms, etc.
 Provide support for e-newsletters and website communications.
 Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of materials
 Ensure that appropriate content and support materials are available for all
AVI public events, including AVI Information Sessions
Developing the
Business
 In consultation with the Manager Marketing & Communications and other
relevant stakeholders, develop and deliver communication strategies &
products that support AVI’s new business initiatives and networks including
Friends of AVI
 Oversee the creation, editing, production and distribution of submissions,
proposals and marketing collateral that supports the development AVI’s
business, programs, services and community engagement activities
 Write/edit new business ideas to ensure clarity of proposal and consistency
with wider organisational operational and brand strategies
 Keep abreast of and inform AVI about potential business opportunities in
the wider marketplace that are in line with AVI’s strategic priorities

 Some interstate and after hours work may be required.
