Pelham Memorial High School Honor Society Criteria and Application Instructions ALL COMPLETED APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 3:15PM ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2015. LATE OR INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED! ONE APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED PER HONOR SOCIETY! Instructions: Students must complete the common application and print a copy for EACH HONOR SOCIETY for which you are applying and submit the application to the designated advisor. Students must attach a copy of their transcript to each application. Students MUST pay close attention to the criteria for each honor society, as they are different. Students should complete the course record document for EACH HONOR SOCIETY SUBJECT AREA for which they are applying and attach that documentation to the application. Students must write a personal statement for EACH HONOR SOCIETY for which they are applying. Students must obtain ONE written faculty recommendation for SOCIAL STUDIES ONLY. Students must obtain TWO faculty recommendations for MATH ONLY. Honor Society Advisors: English: Mr. Sans Math: Dr. Callahan (please submit application to Mrs. Gruber) Science: Mrs. Gruber Social Studies: Mr.Sirico CRITERIA: English: Membership shall be based upon accomplishments in the field of English and overall academic achievement. Applicants must have been in attendance at PMHS for the equivalent of one semester prior to being considered. Applicants must have successfully completed four semesters of required core courses in the field of English. Applicants must be enrolled in an Honors/AP English course and/or an English elective and/or an English sponsored club/activity. 85% English GPA (weighted). 85% Overall GPA (weighted). Mathematics: Membership shall be based upon mathematics scholarship, exemplary character, and citizenship. Applicants must have successfully completed a minimum of one and one-half years of high school or college level mathematics credits and must currently be enrolled in an honors or AP mathematics class. 85% Mathematics GPA (weighted). 85% Overall GPA (weighted). Students must receive written letters of recommendation from TWO current faculty members. Science: Membership shall be based upon science scholarship, exemplary character, and citizenship. Applicants must have successfully completed a minimum of three semesters of high school science classes. 85% Science GPA (weighted). 75% Overall GPA (weighted). Applicants must have demonstrated interest and participated in science or technology related activities (i.e. Science Research, Science Olympiad, Robotics, FAD Club, Environmental Science Club, EMS Training) Social Studies: Membership shall be based upon accomplishments in the field of social studies and overall academic achievement. Applicants must have been in attendance at PMHS for the equivalent of one semester prior to being considered. Applicants must have successfully completed four semesters of required core courses in the field of social studies and be prepared to complete at least six semesters of core course. Applicants must be enrolled in an Honors/AP Social Studies course and/or a Social Studies elective or a Social Studies sponsored club/activity (e.g. Model UN, Military History Club, Model Congress, etc.) 85% Social Studies GPA (weighted). 85% Overall GPA (weighted). Applicants must show participation in activities that demonstrate civic engagement in school or community. Students must receive a written letter of recommendation from ONE current faculty member. Things to be aware of upon your induction: ENGLISH: In order to maintain membership, students must complete a minimum of 15 hours of English related activities each year. These hours can include clubs. Meetings will be held once a month in room 237 and will require your attendance. Check the announcements for the dates and times. MATHEMATICS: Meetings will be held once a month on Monday in room 222 and your membership in the society will require your attendance. Please check the announcements and your email for notifications. In order to maintain membership, students must complete a minimum of 10 hours of mathematics activities/service each year. SCIENCE: Meetings will be held once a month on Thursday in room 253 and your membership in the society will require your attendance. You will be required to participate in various activities throughout the school year in order to be considered an active member of the society. You will complete a set number of hours (10 hours) in order to be considered for the society the following year. These hours can include your involvement in other clubs. During meetings, members will have the opportunity to suggest ideas for activities for the society to participate in. These may include, but are not limited to, fund raising, community service, tutoring and attending presentations. SOCIAL STUDIES: In order to maintain membership, students must complete a minimum of 15 hours of Social Studies related activities each year. These hours can include clubs. Meetings will be held once a month in room 122 and will require your attendance. Check the announcements for the dates and times. Officers for the Honor Society will be elected each year. Officer positions include: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
