Curriculum Overview Religion English Maths Subject Y1 Y3 Y4 Y5 Y6 We teach the objectives from the National Curriculum through studying quality texts. We believe this approach helps the children to develop a love of reading and writing. We learn about spelling, punctuation and grammar in a systematic and progressive way throughout each key stage. Phonics is taught in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, following the RML teaching sequence. Homework is given each week and is linked to spellings and current class activities. Children develop their reading skills through taking home reading books from our extensive school reading scheme, including Oxford Reading Tree and Phonics Bug, and they participate in Guided Reading sessions on a daily basis in class. In these Reciprocal Reading sessions, children read a challenging and varied selection of texts, incorporating fiction and non-fiction, and work both in groups where they are guided by an adult, and also in groups where they develop their reading skills independently from an adult, where each child has a specific and active role. Our RE curriculum is based on The Way, the Truth and the Life and the Caritas schemes. We incorporate Statements to Live By into our RE and PSHCE work and teach about relationships through ‘In the Beginning’. Materials Animals including humans Plants and seasons Science Y2 Objectives from the National Curriculum are taught in a planned sequence in each year group and include topics of number sense, data, fractions, calculation, measures, geometry – properties of shape and geometry – position, direction and movement. Children develop a depth of understanding of each area through problem solving and investigation. Children practise key skills such as number bonds and times tables in school and also as part of their homework activities. Other activities linked to classwork are also set each week to enable the children to work independently on their maths at home.
