We house the world’s most important and extensive collection of cultural and research material, and we promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and culture through access to our collections and including publishing through Aboriginal Studies Press. We engage in a broad research program, covering areas of social and cultural wellbeing, country and governance, and including the Native title Research Unit. AIATSIS works to enhance the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to enable a better understanding of Australia and its people by all Australians. According to recent significance assessments the AIATSIS collection is the “most extensive and best contextualised collection of Indigenous Australia in the world”. As a major national keeping place for Indigenous knowledge, it is also key research infrastructure and a source of information and knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and histories for Australia and the world. The Collections program encompasses all aspects of collection development, management, preservation and access. Position Details The Collection Manager (Print and Published) is responsible for the team within the Collections program which undertakes cataloguing, end processing and archiving functions of all print and published materials such as unpublished manuscripts and series of papers, rare books, and published materials such as books, CDs, DVDs and serials. The team includes archivists, cataloguers and collection assistants who work to national and international professional standards. An understanding of the subject matter (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia) plus knowledge of systems and methods appropriate to ensuring discoverability of collection materials is essential. The role also requires experience in staff management. Also required is an understanding of the how the print and published collection and appropriate means of access to it, may contribute to meeting the need of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and researchers. Duty Statement Under broad direction Manage the effective and efficient operations of the Print and Published Collection Management Team, including collection management activities (cataloguing to professional standards of a wide variety of formats, end processing, archiving), administration, resource management, staff management, and provision of high level service to internal and external clients. Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, strategies and plans to make the print and published materials collection more discoverable. Provide high level expert advice on professional, technical and administrative matters in relation to AIATSIS unpublished print and published materials collections in accordance with corporate, program and project goals, as well as providing written reports, statistics, submissions and more complex correspondence. Contribute to the development of workflow efficiencies in relation to management and preservation of unpublished print and manuscript items and published materials including books, CDs, DVDs, kits, ephemera, maps and serials Lead to create an innovative and engaged culture, facilitating learning and performance, motivating and developing people, encouraging the exploration of diverse views, particularly in times of change. Deliver constructive and objective feedback in a manner that gains acceptance and take responsibility for resolving conflict. Manage under performance effectively. Work as part of the Collections program to achieve AIATSIS and Collections goals, utilising skills in strategic forward planning, problem-solving, decisionmaking, analytical skills to resolve complex issues, and to design and manage projects and for formulation and co-ordination of management related policies. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team in collection management activities (accessioning, cataloguing to professional standards, archiving, end processing and housing for conservation and preservation), including the ability to develop and coordinate workflows and manage processes to achieve results. 4. Demonstrated ability to steer and influence change, and deal with uncertainty while maintaining a positive and flexible outlook. 5. Demonstrated ability to understand the organisation’s objectives and develop and implement operational activities aligning to these objectives. 6. Demonstrated ability to communicate with influence, including providing impartial and forthright advice to senior staff with a sound basis. Qualifications Tertiary qualifications in information science, archival practice or library qualifications are essential with postgraduate studies highly regarded. Demonstrated experience in a cultural heritage collection, library or archive necessary.
