Washburn University seeks a creative and dynamic professional to serve as the Associate Director of
the Leadership Institute/Lecturer. The Associate Director will report to the Director of the
Leadership Institute (LI) and play a central leadership role in the administration of the curricular and
co-curricular components of this interdisciplinary leadership development program.
The incumbent works closely with the Director of the LI to lend support and assist in the
development of goals and objectives for the LI program at Washburn University. The employee is
expected to work independently with minimal instructions from the Director and provide a visible
presence in the LI office during regular business hours.
DUTIES: Oversight and facilitation of co-curricular student leadership activities.






Serve as primary advisor to the Student Leadership Council (SLC), a campus student-run
organization composed of:
o One SLC Fellow (president) who leads the organization
o Student Directors in the areas of Programming, Community and Alumni Outreach,
Communication and Recruitment/Transition
o Thirteen team leaders, and approximately 200 student members
Guide, direct, coach, counsel, and otherwise support LI students to facilitate their continued
growth as they design and implement plans in the following team areas: Marketing, Newsletter,
Social Media, Leadership Laboratories, Service Outreach, Community/Alumni Outreach, K-12,
PALS (mentoring), Socials/Banquets, Homecoming/Family Day, Tabling, Orientation and
Scholarship/Interview Day.
Provide oversight in planning, coordinating, facilitating and generally assisting LI special
events to ensure their success; these include LI's involvement with campus events (i.e. Welcome
Week, New Student Orientations, Homecoming, Family Day, and Junior/Senior Days).
Coordinate LI Leadership Exchange Program, LI Residential Learning Community, and LI
student conference attendance
Collaborate in developing, teaching, and assessing outcomes of seminars, workshops and other
LI educational activities that contribute to the development of students and enhance their LI
experience.
Assist the Director and Leadership Challenge Event (LCE) Fellow in planning and
implementing the LCE, a two-day conference/simulation which draws approximately 200 high
school and college students to the Washburn campus.
Advisement of Leadership Institute students.



Track scholarship fulfillment criteria, enforce student requirements, and standardize processes
to ensure LI program and University standards are upheld.
Advise students regarding enrollment requirements, Leadership Minor and Certificate progress
requirements, and other LI program participation as needed to ensure their understanding of LI.
Assist the Director with advisement of students participating in the Leadership WTE (Washburn
Transformational Experience) and completing internship experiences.
Teaching and curricular involvement.


Teach one to two sections of leadership courses per semester, as needed. Courses may include
LE100: Exploring the Concept of Leadership, LE200: Ethical Responsibilities of Leadership,
LE300: Leadership Skills Development, and LE400: Leadership Internship.
Assist the Director in assessment and evaluation of academic programs.
Administrative and Miscellaneous.






Ensure web content is updated on the Washburn LI website.
Edit all LI communications (i.e. e-newsletter, summer newsletter, etc.) to verify accuracy,
timeliness and relevance of information, and consistency with LI and University standards.
Assist Director in coordinating Leadership Advisory Board to foster relationships with advisory
board members and enhance LI program quality.
Assist in the continued development of partnerships with community and campus constituents.
Serve on various campus committees as relevant and appropriate to develop and strengthen
campus connections.
Other duties as assigned by the Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Master’s degree with two years administrative experience in higher education.
Demonstrated ability to advise, mentor and administer co-curricular programming, and also teach at
the University level. Knowledge of leadership theory, literature and pedagogy. Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills with experience in developing intra-institutional
collaborative partnerships. Evidence of creative thinking regarding approaches to program creation,
problem solving and program renewal. Commitment to a team-based and inter-disciplinary model of
learning.
Preferred: Earned Doctorate. Five years of administrative experience in a higher education
setting. Significant teaching experience.
