Understanding the Time Period: The 1930’s

Before reading To Kill a Mockingbird it is important to understand the social context of the time
period. It was a time of racial tension, war, and financial struggle. Looking at the novel. Scout,
our narrator, shows a world far different than the world that we live in today. To truly
understand Scout’s point of view we must look at the history of the time period. In this lesson,
students will enter the time period by exploring a variety of documents highlighting various
issues that are important to understanding the 1930’s and address the question: What was the
social climate like in the South in the 1930’s?
1. Create a Google Document
2. Title: The South in the 1930’s
3. Name of all group members and Date
After Introduction, create 1 question of your own about life in the South in the 1930’s
1. Why? How? What? No who, when, or where questions.
2. 2-3 sentences for a complete answer
