CODE OF ETHICS
A.
Treating an animal internally or externally, with any
irritant, counterirritant, or other substance used to artificially
change the conformation or appearance of an animal for
show is considered unethical, inhumane, and is prohibited.
This includes, but is not limited to, the use of graphite,
powders, hemp, artificial hair, coloring, common products
such as fly spray, ointment, or liniment used to the point that
it is irritating, or similar type products.
1. The use of dyes, spray paint, or other artificial
coloring anytime on your project, is prohibited.
2. Adding false hair, clipped hair, or hair like material,
fleece, or skin at any point, spot, or area of the animal’s
body is illegal and will result in immediate
disqualification.
B.
The use of tranquilizers, sedatives, or depressants,
which alter the physical or physiological state of the animal,
is illegal.
C.
Surgery, injection or insertion of foreign material under
the skin and/or into the flesh of animal to change the natural
contour, conformation, or appearance of an animal’s body is
illegal. This includes vegetable oil, silicon, or any other
substance used to alter an animals shape. Acceptable
practices of physical preparations, which are allowed,
include: clipping of hair, trimming of hooves and dehorning.
D.
Direct criticism or interference with the judge, show
management, other exhibitors, breed representatives, or
show officials before, during, or after the competitive event
is prohibited.
E.
At the time an animal is sold at auction at the livestock
show, the exhibitors shall be held directly responsible for
animals that are rejected at the processing center due to the

presence of foreign residues. The seller may be liable to the
buyer for an amount equal to three times the purchase price
and may also be liable for attorney’s fees and civil penalties.
Show management may share acceptable intelligence and
evidence information with FDA or USDA. If, for any reason,
the FDA or USDA inspectors must remove any part of a
meat animal carcass; the market price will be discounted.
F.
Show management reserves the right to require
animal health certificates. Health inspection and diagnostic
tests may be made before or after animals are on the
livestock show premises for exhibitor and animal safety, or
to inaugurate disease control procedures which may
become necessary in emergencies as determined by animal
health officials. Any violation of the “Dixie Junior Livestock
Code of Ethics” or specific rules as designated by the
livestock show will result in forfeiture of premiums and
awards, disqualification, and may result in probationary
status and/or loss of eligibility for future participation in the
Dixie Junior Livestock Show. Possible civil penalties may
be imposed by the proper authorities based on evidence
provided by the livestock show of exhibitors in violation of
the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic act/or the animal
mistreatment, neglect, and abandonment laws that apply on
the local, state, and national levels. The decision of the
livestock show management will be final.
Auction
Buyers Information
About the sale:
The Livestock show sale is a traditional event that
brings the community together in support of this character
building, youth program. Buyers have four options at the sale:

Option #1: Send to packer
 You pay the full price of the animal.
 You tell the auctioneer which packer you would like
the animal sent to be processed. Processing fee to
be paid by buyer due upon delivery of the order.
 Proceeds go directly to the participant.
Option #2: Support – Do not keep
 You pay the difference between the bid price, less the
established “buyback” price (printed in column next to
the animal weight).

Less buy back. . .$250.00
You pay . . . . . . . $200.00


Participant receives full bid price.
Animal sold to Dixie Jr. Livestock Committee at
market value.
Option #3: Scholarship Fund – Do not keep
 You pay the full bid price which goes to the participant.
 The animal is then resold, the proceeds of which are
donated to the show for its use in conducting the show
and offering scholarships to local youth.
Option #4: Keeper – Take the animal home
 You pay full price
 You are responsible to remove the animal directly
following the show.
 Proceeds go directly to the participant.
Your name will be announced as a purchaser at the show, as
well as put on Dixie Jr. Livestock Show Facebook page.

RULES & REGULATIONS
1.1
The Show Committee holds final decision and control.
All exhibits, grounds and buildings will be under the
entire control and management of the committee.
They also reserve the right to withhold premiums and
any sale price in excess of support price in every case
in which it shall appear to the committee that the
regulations have not been complied with, or that fraud
or deception has been practiced or attempted.
1.2
The Show Committee has the final and absolute right
to interpret all matters arising out of or connected with
the show or sales.
1.3
When there is limited competition, the judge is
requested to award such premium as the exhibit
merits in his opinion.
1.4
The Dixie Junior Livestock Show will not be
responsible for any loss or damage that may occur.
Each exhibitor will be solely responsible for any loss
or damage done to another or occasioned by, or
arising from any animal or article exhibited by him, and
shall indemnify the Dixie Junior Livestock Show
against all legal or other proceedings in regard
thereto.
1.5
All special awards and trophies will be given at the
exhibitor’s dinner.
1.6
All showing and selling of animals at the show must
be done by exhibitor, unless excused by management
for extreme circumstances. Submission of extreme
circumstances must be presented to the committee in
written form before the event. Failure to comply with
this rule, without prior approval by the show
committee, will forfeit all proceeds from the sale above
market value.

1.7
Failure to comply with these rules or bad conduct will
forfeit premiums.
EXHIBITORS
2.1
All exhibitors must be 4-H or FFA members.
2.2
Exhibitors must be in the third grade, but not less than
8 years of age as of January 1 of the current year. Any
Exhibitor that is a senior in high school for the current
school year and graduates in the spring will be eligible
for the DJLS that year.
Exception: Disabled persons as defined by Public
Law 98-527. In these special cases, the animals must
still be the project animal of the exhibitor and be cared
for daily by the disabled person.
2.3
All junior entries should be approved and SIGNED by
County Agent or FFA Advisor, certifying that the
animals exhibited are owned by the boys or girls and
that these members are in good standing and have all
records up to date.
2.4
4-H exhibitors are to wear collared long or short
sleeved white shirts with official emblem on the left
sleeve (left front if wearing a vest). FFA exhibitors
must wear a white collared long or short sleeve shirt
and tie, with emblem or official jacket. No T-shirts,
tank-tops, tube-tops, sleeveless shirts, etc. are
allowed when exhibitors take their stock in the show
ring and sale ring. Everyone must wear full length
pants. Exhibitors may not wear a hat of any kind while
in the ring. Failure to abide by above dress standard
will preclude exhibitors from placing, selling, or
receiving premium money.

3.1
Please use your complete mailing address on entry
registration form, including zip code.
3.2
All entry fees are $30.00 per animal and must be
included with fully completed entry form.
3.3
Exhibitors can enter, show and sell one animal.
3.4
Home grown animals need to be registered on the
entry form to qualify for that category.
3.5
Scholarship applications are due the same day as
show registration. Those eligible for show
scholarships must meet the following requirement:




Must be a member of 4-H or FFA.
Must have a GPA of 2.5 or better.
Must have participated in the DJLS at least three
years/times including your senior year.
Must be a senior in high school.

3.6
Signed, up-to-date record books are strongly
encouraged to be entered into the Record-Book
Contest, but are not required for participation in the
show or sale.
SHOW ANIMALS
4.1
Animals in market classes will be classified for judging
according to weight.
4.2
All market steers, market lambs and market hogs in
each division (4-H and FFA) will be judged jointly
regardless of division membership.
4.3
Animals that have previously gone through another
livestock show must be shown by the same exhibitor.
Once an animal has gone through a Junior Livestock
Show and sale, it is no longer eligible to enter the Dixie
Junior Livestock Show.
4.4
All market animals exhibited at Dixie Junior Livestock
Show must be OWNED, FED, AND TRAINED by the
exhibitor for at least 90 days for lambs and hogs and
120 days for steers previous to the show.
4.5
All male animals in all market classes must have been
castrated. No open sores permitted.
4.6
Each participant shall only bring one animal. No
alternate animals may be brought to the show and left
for slaughter.
4.7
Each participant may tag only one additional animal
as an alternate for each family group or 4H & FFA
group. Alternate animal may only be used within that
group.

HOME GROWN ANIMALS
5.1
In order for an animal to be considered “home
grown” the following conditions must be met: The
exhibitor or Extended family must COMPLETELY
OWN THE MOTHER and house her at their local
place of operation (leased, borrowed, or owned).
 Animal may be bred at another location, but must
return to a local place of operation to carry out
pregnancy and delivery.
 The animal MUST BE BORN, RAISED, AND
CARED FOR ON THE EXHIBITOR’S LOCAL
PLACE OF OPERATION, adequate for good
animal birthing and husbandry practices.
o Example: Local lambing shed (Lamb),
farrowing pen (Hog), or local pasture or range
(Steer).
5.2
The grand, reserve, heavy, middle and light weight
market champions’ may participate in the Home
Grown event but if they win they will forfeit their
champion weight buckles. Only one buckle will be
awarded per exhibitor.
ANIMAL CARE AND HOUSING
6.1
Exhibitors must put up place cards on their stall,
stating name and club or chapter. The stalls and
exhibitors' area/gear must be cleaned by 8 a.m. each
day and kept clean. All refuse matter will be disposed
of as the committee chairman may direct.
6.2
Exhibitors shall furnish necessary feed for animals.
Bedding will be provided by the Dixie Jr. Livestock
Show. If necessary, a bedding charge will be
assessed to each exhibitor.
6.3
Waste shavings and manure must be piled outside of
the area where designated by the committee.

6.4
No muzzles or other devices that prohibit or hinder
eating or drinking are allowed on any animal at the
show grounds. Liquid diets (drenching) are strictly
prohibited. All feeds should be naturally taken, “free
choice,” by the animal. Any violation of this rule will
cause the animal to be sifted.
6.5
No one is allowed to sleep in the livestock areas.
MISCELLANEOUS
7.1
Exhibitors must allow their animals to be used in the
judging contest if requested.
7.2
Premium money will be pro-rated as recommended by
the judge and at the full discretion of the Dixie Junior
Livestock Show Committee.
7.3
Complaints/Protests must be made in writing along
with a $50 deposit, and presented to the grievance
committee within six hours after the cause or causes
of the complaint/protest. If the grievance committee
agrees it is a good suggestion, the author will get
his/her money back. If not, it goes into the junior
livestock show fund. The grievance committee
consists of the Vice President, President, and Past
President.
7.4
All entries must be on the grounds no later than 12
noon. Thursday, April 23, 2015. Entries arriving at a
later time will be disqualified unless special approval
from the committee. Animals will be received from
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, April 23, 2015 (Animals must
be accompanied by sufficient help to unload and care
for in pens.)
7.5
All animals may only be weighed in one time. You
may not go back and feed, water, etc. your animal and
come back and weigh again. If they do not make
weight the first time they will be sifted from the market

class, but may still show in fitting and showmanship.
7.6
Only Exhibitors will be allowed in the show ring, unless
the committee deems it necessary for the safety of the
exhibitors.
7.7
ALL ANIMALS MUST BE TRAINED TO HANDLE
PROPERLY.
SIFTING OF EXHIBITS
8.1
A sifting committee will examine all exhibits and
eliminate any animals not considered of suitable
quality, condition or health to enter competition.
Animals not properly trained to handle will be sifted.
Market beef must be dehorned, trimmed and must
grade at least SELECT. They will be examined at time
of weigh-in. Those not meeting above standard will
be sifted at that time.
8.2
To qualify for sale, steers must gain a minimum of 1.5
lbs average per day from the day of the weigh in at
tagging to weigh in at the show. Exhibitor’s steer,
hogs, or lamb projects that do not meet minimum
weight requirements, may still participate in
showmanship. In order to participate in showmanship
with an underweight animal the housing fee must be
paid at the time of weigh in at the scales or you must
remove your animal immediately. All underweight
steers, hogs and lambs must be removed from the
show barn by 10:00 pm on Thursday. As with any
project animal leaving the show, they must be
checked off by the committee member over that
species. If the exhibitor desires to show their animal
in showmanship, there will be housing fee of $50 for
steers and $25 for lambs and hogs, this fee must be
paid at the scales. If the animal is not removed from
the barn it will be turned over to support and proceeds
will be forfeited to the show.

8.3
Sifted animals will be marked and will be removed
from the exhibit area by 10 pm Thursday night. Sifted
steer, hogs, and lambs may be taken home.
FITTING AND SHOWMANSHIP
9.1
Fitting/grooming the animals prior to the show is an
educational practice that should be experienced by
each youth. Parents and 4-H/FFA leaders should
teach and assist in this process, but not do it for
them.
9.2
No chemicals, additives, adhesives, oils, coloring
products or sprays and/or other grooming products
may be used at anytime on the project animal. THIS
AFFECTS ALL SPECIES. For washing purposes
shampoos that will not alter the color of the animal
will be allowed.
9.3
NO clippers, shears, scissors and/or grooming
devises are allowed to be used at the show. THIS
AFFECTS ALL SPECIES. All clipping and shearing
must be done prior to arriving at the show
grounds. Only blowers scotch combs and brushes
will allowed at the show for fitting purposes.
It is strongly suggested the exhibitor’s not bring
the restricted equipment listed above.
9.4
All species must be washed after weigh in before
entering the show ring for both fitting and
showmanship and market competitions. All species
must be checked off by the specified show
committee member assigned.
9.5
Fitting and Showmanship Contest
Class 1 - 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grade
Class 2 - 6th, 7th, 8th grade
Class 3 - 3rd, 4th, 5th grade

9.6
Exhibitors must show their own animals.
9.7
Animals must be completely groomed and ready for
contest when entering the arena.
MARKET HOGS
10.1
Market hogs will be placed in Blue, Red and White
ribbons.
10.2
Premiums for the various grades will be pro-rated
according to the number and quality of animals
shown.
10.3
Hogs will be weighed into show and classed by
weight. Market Hogs under 220 pounds will be
sifted. Maximum sale weight will be 285 pounds. All
weights above this point will be allowed to show, but
will be sold as a 285 pound animal. (This was done to
allow heavier animals to show without exhibitors
having to “holdback”/starve their animals and reduce
the quality of the meat.) Top hogs in each class will
compete for champion.
10.4
Feeding of hogs and cleaning of pens must be done
before 8 a.m. and between the hours of 5-7 p.m.
Troughs and feed shall be moved from the area at all
other times.
10.5
Hogs must be fed away from the alleys. Troughs and
other gear must be kept out of alleys.
10.6
All hogs must be washed before coming to show
grounds.
10.7
The committee reserves the right to apportion space
and assign pens as necessary.
MARKET LAMBS
11.1
Market lambs will be placed in Blue, Red and White

ribbons.
11.2
Premiums for the various grades will be pro-rated
according to the number and quality of animals
shown.
11.3
Weight limits on Market Lambs will be between 100
pounds and 160 pounds. Lambs under 100 pounds
will be sifted. All weights above 160 pounds will be
allowed to show, but will be sold as a 160 pound
animal. Top lambs in each class will compete for
champion.
11.4
Lambs must be slick sheared before arrival to the
Livestock Show. Lambs must be tight shorn before
they cross the scale at weigh-in with no butt pattern.
11.5
All female lambs are required to have a scrapie tag
from the breeder.
MARKET BEEF
12.1
Market Beef will be placed in Blue, Red and White
ribbons.
12.2
Premiums for the various grades will be pro-rated
according to the number and quality of animals
shown.
12.3
Minimum weight on beef is 1,150 pounds. Any
animal below this will be sifted. Animals over 1,350
pounds will be allowed to show, but will be sold as a
1,350 pound animal.
12.4
All Market Beef will be stalled in specified area.
12.5
Any Market Beef exhibited at any previous show must
be exhibited at this show by the original owner.

SALE OF ANIMALS
13.1
An exhibitor will only be allowed to sell one animal.
Any animals shown in market class and subsequently
pulled from the sale shall be subject to standard
commission fees based on market price. Exhibitors
must declare and pay fees within 1 hour of the end of
the judging of Grand Champion class. If not declared
your animal is required to sell.
13.2
Only animals receiving blue or red ribbons will be sold
in the sale. Those receiving white ribbons cannot be
sold in the sale.
13.3
All steers must have a brand inspection certificate
accompanying the animal at weigh-in, unless “Home
Grown”.
13.4
Exhibitors must not dispose of animals before the
close of the show. Any violation of this rule subjects
the exhibitor to a forfeiture of all premiums won by him
or her.
13.5
The show management shall have entire and
complete say as to how and when animals are entered
in the auction sale. It shall be the aim of show
committee to so classify sale entries that animals of
similar quality shall follow each other in sale order.
13.6
Owners of animals are responsible for their animals
until they are sold and placed in specific holding area
designated by the Dixie Jr. Livestock Show
Committee. Buyers are then responsible.
13.7
All Grand Champion and Reserve Champion animals
must be sold through the auction. All steers, barrow
hogs, and wether lambs must go to slaughter but ewe
lambs and gilt hogs may be kept for the purpose of
breeding.

13.8
There will be a five percent commission charge on all
private or auction sales of livestock. In addition, there
will be a $5.00 per animal charge for transportation
and feed by the Stock Show Committee to
compensate for delivery of animals to buyers or
packers.
13.9
Animals exceeding the maximum weight listed in their
class will be sold for that max weight (Hog=285,
Lamb=160, Steer=1,350).
13.10 All market animals may be sold by the pound or by the
head at the decision of the sale committee.
