Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a part-time fixed term position
(0.25 FTE) as a Research Assistant in Psychiatry, School of Medicine at the National
University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded by the Health Research Board
www.hrb.ie and is available from March 2013 to contract end date of December 2013.
Information on project/centre
The Galway First Episode Psychosis Study was initiated in 2007 and comprised a cohort of
individuals with psychosis and matched controls that underwent clinical assessment and
structural neuroimaging. Subsequently a 4 year follow-up study has been undertaken on this
cohort to comprehensively evaluate these individuals both from a clinical and neuroimaging
perspective. This initiative, funded by the Health Research Board will involve the
dissemination of information about this 4 year follow-up study beyond the traditional
academic community. Information in relation to the rationale, design, results and the clinical
relevance of the study will be disseminated to General Practitioners, primary care nurses,
staff and attendees at Jigsaw Galway (an organisation which supports individuals age 16-25
who have concern over their mental health), and service users and their families or carers.
Information regarding the clinical and functional outcome measurements (e.g. clinical
course, quality of life, global assessment of functioning) at 4 year follow-up and how they are
associated with baseline neuroanatomy and clinical variables will be disseminated. The
research assistant will also be involved in disseminating information in relation to the
aetiology, identification and management of First Episode Psychosis, and will have
opportunity to be involved with other research and teaching activities with Psychiatry at NUI
Galway.
Job Description:
The successful candidate will:
 Disseminate information to General Practitioners and Primary Care Nurses on first
episode and the Galway 4 year Follow-up study of First Episode Psychosis
predominantly via face-face interviews
 Chair meetings with Jigsaw Galway, with service users and their family members or
carers in relation to mental health issues and in particular First Episode Psychosis.
 Liaise with the Irish Advocacy Network and service user organisations in relation to
First Episode Psychosis
 Design educational brochures in relation to psychosis.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have experience as a psychiatric nurse. Candidates should have
excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about
psychiatry; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate
would have engaged in previous research activities or clinical audit.
Salary: €21,865 - €28,938 per annum, pro-rata for this part-time post.
