WESTERN HOSPITAL, BOREELA, COLOMBO 08, CELEBRATES WORLD KIDNEY DAY
THE 10TH WORLD KIDNEY DAY – 12TH MARCH 2015 – KIDNEY HEALTH FOR ALL
Western Hospital celebrated the 10th World Kidney Day on Sunday the 08th March 2015. This year World
Kidney Day falls on 12th March 2015. This programme was advanced as Prof. Rezvi Sheriff, Chief
Nephrologist of Western Hospital as well as the pioneer Nephrologist who started the World Kidney Day
celebration in Sri Lanka will not be available on the 12thas he will be attending The world Congress of
Nephrology in Cape Town, South Africa.
The theme for 2015 is “Kidney Health for All”. The programme started at 9.00am with releasing Blue
and Green Balloons and 2 Pigeons and with an Opening Ceremony. Prof. Rezvi Sheriff, Pioneer
Nephrologist who introduced Haemoidialysis and kidney transplantation to this country was the Chief
Guest. He made a valuable speech to the audience about how people should be vigilant of kidney
disease by regular checking of diabetes, hypertension and also controlling factors leading to diabetes
and hypertension. He gave the message to the public that although Dialysis and Transplantation are
available as solution for chronic kidney failure people should make every attempt to prevent kidney
disease.
There was representation from the Sri Lanka Kidney Patients' Association and the Secretary made a
speech. Kidney Patients Association launched a kidney sticker to create awareness amongst the
publicthat they should do regular kidney check up, control Diabetes and High Blood Pressure and to be
conscious to have as much possible chemical/poisonless food and water in their day to day life.
The next and important item was the Free Kidney Screening Clinic which started at 9.30 am and went
on till 10 pm. Full Kidney Check up was done at this clinic ie. Serum Creatinine, Urine Full Report, Fasting
Blood Sugar and Ultrasound Scan and 100 patients were seen. Few cases were diagnosed to have
kidney problems for the first time at this clinic. Dr. Rikaz Sheriff and Dr. Habeeba Sheriff conducted this
clinic. Dr. Sanjaya Heiyanthuduwa, Consultant Nephrologist, did the Kidney Ultrasound Examinations.
