Qualifications
The entry qualifications of an Associate Lecturer vary
greatly, ranging from those who have completed an
honours degree to those who have completed a PhD or
EdD degree and possess extensive experience. This
means that within the Level A category, there are at least
two levels of duties and expectations of performance based
on the qualifications, skills and experience of the staff
member.
Variations to this requirement in particular Schools are as
follows:
Qualifications
Appointment or promotion to a Lecturer position would
normally require completion of a research higher
degree, and where this not a PhD or EdD, at least
substantial progress toward a doctoral degree.
Variations to this requirement in particular Schools are
as follows:
School of Education: Appointment or promotion to a
Lecturer position would require holding or working
towards a higher degree in Education or allied
discipline.
Flinders Business School: Normally requires a higher
degree in a business related discipline.
School of Humanities: For staff whose responsibilities are
principally concerned with professional practice or creative
arts, evidence of independent or professional work which
has recognised professional standing and can be
considered equivalent may be an acceptable alternative to a
research higher degree.
School of Humanities: For staff whose responsibilities
are principally concerned with professional practice or
creative arts, evidence of independent or professional

School of Computer Science, Engineering and
Mathematics: An Associate Lecturer in Computing
Science/IT will normally have completed four years of
tertiary study in the relevant discipline and/or have
equivalent qualifications and/or professional experience. A
position at this level will normally require an honours degree
or higher qualifications.
School of Computer Science, Engineering and
Mathematics: A Lecturer in Computing Science/IT will
normally have advanced qualifications or recognised
significant experience in the relevant discipline area. A
position at this level will normally require a doctoral
qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing.
Flinders Law School: A coursework higher degree, or
evidence of independent or professional work
considered to be of an equivalent standard may be an
acceptable alternative to a research higher degree.

School of Medicine: A BMBS or equivalent degree may be
an acceptable alternative for clinical academic staff.
Qualifications

School of Medicine: For other than medically
qualified applicants, a coursework qualification or
equivalent accreditation and standing may be an
acceptable alternative to a research higher degree.
Medically qualified applicants who are undertaking
clinical practice require a Fellowship of a recognised
Professional Medical College or higher clinical
qualification or, in exceptional circumstances,
extensive relevant professional experience and
recognised professional standing may be acceptable
as an alternative.
School of Nursing and Midwifery: For staff with academic
status, a BN or equivalent degree may be an acceptable
alternative.
Academic Profile (Levels A and B)
(NB: Fellowship of a Professional Medical College
requires at least six years of professional training and
may include some research training and experience. It
is considered equivalent to a PhD at Lecturer level in
recognition of the time and effort to achieve the
professional qualification.)
School of Nursing and Midwifery: Required to either
have a PhD or demonstrate substantial progress
toward completion of a doctoral degree.
School of Social and Policy Studies (Politics and
Public Policy): Normally require completion of a PhD.
Alternatively, some combination of an almost-complete
PhD and/or a good Masters degree and/or
publications.
School of International Studies (Flinders Asia
Centre): In addition to the generic qualifications
criteria, a good command of at least one Asian
language is desirable.
School of Social and Policy Studies (Flinders
Institute of Public Policy and Management):
Normally require completion of a relevant postgraduate
qualification or equivalent research or management or
policy experience deemed to be appropriate.

Teaching
The activities in which a staff member could be expected to
be involved, and provide evidence of, include but are not
limited to:
 preparing and delivering lectures and seminars, with
indications of the skill, quality and effectiveness as
evidenced by Student Evaluations of Teaching,
supervisor, peers;
 tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops,
student field excursions, clinical sessions and/or studio
sessions, with evidence of the skill, quality and
effectiveness;
 the development of an explicit teaching philosophy (i.e.
approach to teaching);
 developing topic material (including study guides) with
appropriate guidance from the topic or course
coordinator;
 supervision of students;

School of Psychology: A PhD is an essential
requirement.
Student Learning Centre: A research higher degree,
a coursework higher degree or a professional higher

 experience in the delivery of teaching, including
evidence of the types of teaching undertaken, with
indications of the skill, quality, and effectiveness as
evidenced by Student Evaluations of Teaching,
supervisor, peers;

teaching awards;
acting as topic coordinator, where appropriate, provided
that the skills and experience demonstrate this capacity;
consultation with students;
marking and assessment primarily connected with
topics in which the staff member teaches;
producing teaching materials for students for whom the
staff member has responsibility;

initiation and development of topic material;

administration/service; other activities in Flinders Medical
