Dr. Yawn is a full time family physician
researcher. After 12 years as a full time rural
family physician, Barbara transitioned into a
full time research position. Dr. Yawn's areas
of research include the diagnostic process,
women’s health, and asthma identification
and management. Her work in asthma has
included pilot studies on the natural history
of asthma in primary care patients, asthma
school based screening, stigmatization in
children with asthma and disease labeling in
people with asthma.
Provides oversight of the development and
implementation of the PROQOL monitoring
system. Dr. Sloan has published extensively
(over 325 peer-reviewed publications to date)
across a broad spectrum of health care
research, including reporting the results of
clinical trials and observational studies,
methodological work in clinical trial design,
psychometrics of patient-reported outcomes,
and statistical analysis, including assessment
methods, tool development, and clinical
significance of QOL changes.
His research focus is in the domain of
biomedical terminology and ontology, with a
long-standing emphasis upon scalable
terminology services that can be used across
biology and medicine. This work has
extended into high-throughput disease
phenotyping methods using electronic health
records.
