Dr. Yawn is a full time family physician researcher. After 12 years as a full time rural family physician, Barbara transitioned into a full time research position. Dr. Yawn's areas of research include the diagnostic process, women’s health, and asthma identification and management. Her work in asthma has included pilot studies on the natural history of asthma in primary care patients, asthma school based screening, stigmatization in children with asthma and disease labeling in people with asthma. Provides oversight of the development and implementation of the PROQOL monitoring system. Dr. Sloan has published extensively (over 325 peer-reviewed publications to date) across a broad spectrum of health care research, including reporting the results of clinical trials and observational studies, methodological work in clinical trial design, psychometrics of patient-reported outcomes, and statistical analysis, including assessment methods, tool development, and clinical significance of QOL changes. His research focus is in the domain of biomedical terminology and ontology, with a long-standing emphasis upon scalable terminology services that can be used across biology and medicine. This work has extended into high-throughput disease phenotyping methods using electronic health records.
