REMINDER TO PARENTS
Please remember that the bus lane
needs to remain empty of vehicles while
buses are present (typically in the
morning from 7:30 – 7:37 a.m.)
It seems like there has been an extraordinary
number of families that have taken vacations
over the last couple of months. We do
understand that family time is important, but
we would like to encourage families
planning vacations to work around the
school’s schedule when possible. It is
difficult for any student to make up missed
assignments in a completely satisfactory
manner because the value of classroom
instruction and classroom activities are
missed forever.
Thank you for your consideration.
New Information We Should Know About?
Please be sure to keep the office up-to-date
on new addresses, home telephone numbers
and work numbers. It has come to our
attention that students are moving out of the
School District and not informing the
office. If you do move out of the Bristol
School District, and you wish for your
child(ren) to continue to be enrolled at
Bristol School, a “Tuition Due to Move
Form” needs to be filled out. This allows
your child to remain at Bristol School for the
remainder of the present school year. Open
Enrollment papers would then need to be
filled out in February for your child to be
accepted to Bristol School for the following
school year. The only exemption to this
would be is if you would move out of state.
So, please inform the office of any residency
changes so that the appropriate forms and
procedures can be followed.

WKCE TESTING
Dear Parent/Guardian of Bristol 4th and 8th
Grade Students,
The format for state testing has changed this
year. Our 4th and 8th grades will be tested in the
areas of Science and Social Studies using the
WKCE (Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts
Examination) assessment tool. The testing
window for the WKCE is October 27th through
November 7th.

NEWSLETTER
Our 3rd through 8th grade students will be tested
in the areas of Reading and Math using the
Smarter Balanced Assessment which is
Common Core aligned. This assessment will be
completed in the spring. The testing window
runs from the end of March to the end of May.
Testing is necessary for district accountability as
well as curriculum planning. Additionally, the
results of these assessments are directly tied to
the School Report Card. We are looking for
your child’s best effort on these assessments and
we would greatly appreciate all the support we
can get from home.
On DPI’s website, parents can access sample
questions for each subject that is tested at your
child’s grade level.

enrollment the size of ours. At the
present time, 99.73% of our students
have 0-1 referrals. That is awesome!!!!!
Defiance (talking back) has been cited 8
times since the beginning of the school
year. As a result, this month's Cool Tool
will center on the topic: conflict
resolution/respectfully disagreeing.
The Cool Tool will be taught by your
child’s teacher during the week of
November 3rd.
Sincerely,
Tier 2 training (PBIS-Positive Behavior
Intervention and Support) will begin on
November 5th. Five of the BE's
Committee members will be involved in
this training. The purpose of the training
is to gain knowledge and learn more
about targeted behavioral interventions
that are used for tougher/chronic
behavioral situations.

BRISTOL BE’S DATA
Jeff Terry
Principal
Prior to testing, 4th and 8th grade teachers spent
time helping our students to prepare for the
Science and Social Studies portion of the
WKCE.
Dear Parent and Guardian,
The Bristol BE’s Data Committee met
recently to discuss October's Office
Referrals and to plan this month's Cool
Tool. A Cool Tool is a lesson (based on
data) that targets a specific negative
behavior. The lesson includes
ideas/examples on how to turn negative
behaviors into more positive behaviors.
The office received 10 referrals for the
month of October. The average number
of referrals per day for October
calculates to 0.48. This number is

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD
HOME FROM SCHOOL
You may wonder when to keep
your child home because of
illness. The following guidelines
may help you in making that
decision. Your child’s doctor
may also assist you.
FEVER
A fever is a warning that all is not right in the
body. The child may have a disease that could
spread to other children. Also he or she
probably does not feel well enough to be at
school or daycare.

No child with a temperature greater that 100° F
should be sent to school or daycare. When a
thermometer is not available, check the child’s
forehead with the back of your hand. If it is hot,
keep the child home until the fever can be
checked with a thermometer. Do not allow the
child to return to school/daycare until free of
fever for 24 hours.
COLDS, SORE THROATS, COUGH
A child experiencing a cold with a lot of
congestion and a hacking cough belongs at
home in bed, even if no fever exists.
RASHES
A rash might be the first sign of a childhood
illness, such as chickenpox. A rash may cover
the entire body or appear in only one area. Do
not send a child with a rash to school or daycare
until the doctor has said it is safe to do so.
DIARRHEA
Diarrhea is a bowel movement that is watery or
more loose than normal for the child. If a child
has more than one loose stool or liquid stool in a
day, he/she should be kept at home.

POPS is an acronym for Power of
Positive Students. Each month 5 – 8
grade teachers nominate students to
receive this special recognition award.
Students are recognized for making

VOMITING
Keep your child home until the child can keep
his/her food down.
PINK EYE
Pink eye causes redness of the white part of the
eye. There may also be clear, yellow, or green
drainage. Pink eye can be spread by hand to eye
contact or sharing towels and washcloths. The
child should stay home until he/she has been on
an antibiotic for 24 hours or until seen by a
physician.
HEAD LICE
Head lice are flat insects that live in human hair.
Lice hatch from small eggs called nits. Nits
attach firmly to the hair’s shaft, most often
behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. The
adult insects bite the scalp causing the itching.
Anyone can get head lice. Lice are easily spread
by close contact with an infested person or by
sharing hats and combs. A child with head lice
is to stay home until treated and free of nits.

Schools
In accordance with Federal Law, the Board
of Education prohibits the use, possession,
concealment, or distribution of drugs by
students on school grounds, in school or
school-approved vehicles, or at any schoolrelated event. Drugs include any alcoholic
beverage, anabolic steroid, dangerous
controlled substance as defined by State
statute, or substance that could be
considered a “look-a-like” controlled
substance. Compliance with the policy is
mandatory for all students. Any student
who violates this policy will be subject to
disciplinary action, in accordance with due
process and as specified in the student
handbook, up to and including expulsion
from school. When required by State law,
the District will also notify law enforcement
officials.
The District is concerned about any student
who is a victim of alcohol or drug abuse and

November Library News
It’s been a fun-filled month of learning in the Bristol School Library Media Center.
Each week, Ms. Weiner teaches 28 classes of grades K-6 various aspects of library
science, introduces reading genres and integrates classroom curriculum.
Battle of the Books (B.O.B.) titles were released on October 13! This is a
special opportunity for 4-6 graders to read about 40 books, chosen by area
librarians, teachers and students and then meet in groups to discuss the books and
have mock battles to prepare for the school battle dates. A parent meeting was
held on Monday, October 20 to give students and their parents an overview of the
program and expectation requirements. Over 70 students and parents came to
learn about B.O.B. and watch a mock battle from last year’s team members. We
should have a great team this year! Practices will be on Mondays after school
beginning November 17, so if you love reading, communicating and are free on
Mondays after school, see Ms. Weiner in the library for the necessary paperwork.
The Fall Scholastic Book Fair will be at the Bristol School Library November
7-13! The new “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” is scheduled to go on sale
November 4, but kids at Bristol were able to reserve a copy in advance. Don’t
worry if you didn’t reserve your copy, we will have plenty of those and many other
titles available at the book fair. What a great time to do some holiday shopping!
Shop online for an even larger selection between November 1-November 16.
All items will be shipped to the school at the close of the online fair. No charge
for shipping. This is a great way to get your shopping done without leaving the
house! We can even call you to come to school and pick it up if you don’t want your
children to see your purchases!

We are in desperate need of volunteers to make this year’s book fair as successful
as those in the past. We use the proceeds to fund the birthday books each K-8
child gets to pick for their birthday, the bookmarks, pencils, erasers and other
items for the PBIS system, Accelerated Reader programs and book purchases and
equipment to enhance the library. At the end of the 2013-2014 school year, we
used our proceeds to thank our families, staff and supporters by offering a buy

one get one free book fair. We cannot do this again this year as we would not have
any funds for the above mentioned programs.
Since the library is occupied by 28 classes per week (3 full school days and 2 half
days) it will be very challenging to staff the fair as the librarian and her assistant
will be involved with classes. We are looking for volunteers to help cover lunches
and parent teacher conferences for the following times in one hour blocks:
Fri 11/7/14, Mon 11/10/14, Tues 11/11/14, Wed 11/12/14, Thurs 11/13/14
7:30-3:00
and
Tuesday, 11/11/14 and Thursday, 11/13/14
4:00– 7:30
We are also looking for volunteers to set up and pack up the book fair merchandise.
I cannot give those dates and times yet, as Scholastic will not confirm the delivery
and pick up until about a week before the fair begins. If you have daytime
flexibility, are organized, can lift boxes of books and like to set up tables, email
bergmann.lis@bristol.k12.wi.us and I will get back to you with the dates.
