Welcome to our first newsletter! By popular demand we have introduced
this newsletter in conjunction with "The Integrative
Connection," Dickinson's only nutritional information and discount

Can prescription drugs deplete essential nutrients?
Part 1 of an ongoing series
Medications can be very beneficial to your health and
are many times necessary. Unfortunately, there are
also many times when a medication is used for good,
but the drug causes an unwanted side effect. These
side effects often happen because the drug depletes
your body of a vital nutrient. These "drug-induced
nutrient depletions" are not often known by
medical professionals as this is a newer area of research. As
an end result, you may suffer needlessly or be put on another
drug to combat the side effect when all that is needed is a simple
supplement.
Cholesterol Medications and CoQ10
Virtually all cholesterol lowering medications (and many blood pressure
and diabetes meds) deplete the body of a vital nutrient called Coenzyme
Q10. Drugs known to deplete CoQ10 include "statins" such as
simvastatin and Lipitor, and Beta-Blockers, such as metoprolol. CoQ10
is also known as the "spark plug of the cell" as it helps produce energy

and is needed in every cell of your body. We have numerous patients
who start on a cholesterol lowering agent and later complain of muscle
aches and low energy. This is directly related to the drug depleting your
body of CoQ10. CoQ10 functions as an intracellular antioxidant and
benefits the most metabolically active cells: heart, immune system, and
gastric mucosa. An adequate supply is vital to the heath of heart
muscle, where it may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and may
maintain healthy blood pressure. CoQ10 may also have the ability to
protect brain function and may be a vital nutrient in the prevention of

Arm your immune system... Vitamin D
Scientists at the University of Copenhagen
have discovered that without sufficient intake
of vitamin D, the killer cells of the immune
system-T cells-will not be able to react to an
fight off serious infections in the body. For T
cells to detect and kill foreign pathogens such
as viruses, the cells must first be 'triggered' into action and 'transform'
from inactive and harmless immune cells into killer cells that are primed
to seek out and destroy all traces of invaders. When a T cell is exposed
to a foreign pathogen, it extends a signaling device known as a vitamin
D receptor, with which it searches for vitamin D. This means that the T
cell must have vitamin D or activation of the cell will cease. If the T cells
cannot find enough vitamin D in the blood, they won't even begin to
mobilize.
Vitamin D also provides a myriad of other benefits including improved
absorption of calcium, help warding off depression, and improved
outcomes of breast cancer to name a few. Under the right
circumstances, 10-15 minutes of sun on the arms and legs can generate
nearly all the vitamin D we need. Unfortunately, the "right circumstances"
are elusive. Except during the summer months, the skin makes little if
any vitamin D from the sun at latitudes above 37 degrees north (the
shaded region of the map). People who live in these areas are at
relatively greater risk for vitamin D deficiency. We recommend a good
vitamin D supplement all year round, but it's essential that you
supplement during the winter months in North Dakota. Fortunately,
vitamin D is relatively inexpensive. But remember, not any vitamin D
supplementwill do. Be sure to look for vitamin D3.
