ANZAC Commemorative Naming Project Grant application information and form Every municipal council will be offered a grant of at least $1000 from the Office of Geographic Names (OGN). The application form to receive this grant is on the last page of this document. The decision of how the grant is allocated rests with council. It can be split up and used to fund organisations or interested members of the public to conduct research into name proposals, or place names currently in use. Councils will be allocated the grant after the grant application has been received. The grant can be used in the recoupment of expenditure as follows: Allocated to members of the public or organisations that conduct research into names. Traveling expenses, food and fuel. Research completed on behalf of council into names. Research of local monuments, RSL records, libraries, family histories, private collections etc. Research using online websites. Creation of a compendium of researched names from the local area. Workshops with the community and organisations. Advice to councils. Examples of how the grant can be used are provided below: Example 1: The local RSL wants to become involved in the project and approaches council. The RSL has some memorabilia from the Second World War and wants to honour the soldiers to whom the memorabilia belonged. The RSL believes that there are around twenty names that could be researched. Council provides a grant of $300 to the local RSL in the form of a non-binding agreement. RSL member fills in the commemorative name checklist and submits the name to council for consideration. Example 2: Local school children and teachers have heard about the project and want to become involved. The teacher and students visit a local RSL branch; or, find a local monument or honour board with veterans names from the local area. The students conduct online research into the names using the research guidance notes and fill in the commemorative name checklists. Council offers to award a prize to the best researched Anzac name, with the possibility of a road, feature or locality being named. The prize is funded from the grant and is split into three prizes, 1st prize is $50, 2nd prize $35 and 3rd prize is $15. Example 3: A local historical society offers its services to council to research and compile a compendium of names, and add the historical information to the VICNAMES register. The historical society believes they will find 80 or more names. Council provides a grant of $500 to the local historical society in the form of a non-binding agreement. The historical society uses the grant to hold two extra workshops with catering for its members. Example 4: The council has received some interest from members of the public, teachers and organisations. Council plans to hold a workshop to discuss how best to engage with the community, gauge interest and divide the tasks. Council uses $200 to provide catering to attendees. Example 5: Local historical societies, schools and the RSL have shown some interest in the project and are ready and willing to research local veterans names. Council asks the interested parties how many names they think they will be able to research and propose. Council will decide how to distribute funds across the interested parties.
