Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the new graduate will be able to:

Describe a systematic plan of management for emergencies such as:
 Hemorrhagic shock
 Septic shock
 Cardiac arrhythmias
 Congestive heart failure
 Pulmonary embolism
 Acute psychosis
 CVA
 Asthma
 Severe hypertension
 Acute renal failure
 Acute respiratory failure
 Gastrointestinal bleeding
 Acute pain syndromes
 Ophthalmic injuries
 Meningitis

Recognize common radiologic abnormalities in adults and children

Describe appropriate measures to prevent harm to patient and physician from
exposure to diagnostic radiation.

Describe the most useful diagnostic tests for a variety of common medical
problems

Recognize common dermatologic disorders

Describe the appropriate indications for use of specific antibiotics

Present “bad news” to patients in a compassionate and supportive manner

Describe the appropriate responses for common telephone pages from members
of the nursing staff and other physicians.

Describe a sound plan for management of personal finances

Describe the major threats to patient safety

Describe the major reasons for malpractice claims and list the key methods
for reducing the risk of professional liability actions

Recognize major teratogens and avoid prescribing them to pregnant women

Counsel a patient for common medical and surgical interventions

Provide discharge instructions to patients following common medical and surgical
interventions

Describe key principles related to study design, classification of scientific
evidence, and statistics

Describe the key steps in preparing an effective medical lecture

Describe the most important steps in providing effective feedback to
trainees

Describe important principles for effective small group teaching

Describe the correct format for making an oral presentation at a scientific
meeting
