1 Dr. Todd Jennings and Dr. Jan Kottke EDUC 709 Diversity and Equity in Educational Leadership Student Learning Objective reflection on my PowerPoint Project, Poster Project, and Concept Maps. Student Learning Objectives: 1. Students will be familiar with the complex nature of “diversity” as a construct in both the fields of education and administration/organizational theory a. While working on a group PowerPoint Project with Allan Aab and Catherine Terrell I researched and focused on religious diversity in America. One element of the project on religious diversity also focused on education. In addition to becoming familiar with the complex nature of religious diversity, I also focused on “diversity” as it relates to disabled students in the American school system. Disabled students are often marginalized in our school system and “separate but equal” platforms are still being discussed and implemented under the guise of helping a disenfranchised student population. 2. Students will explore education organizations as cultures comprised of a variety of diverse participant-stakeholders that include students, teachers, administrative staff, and community members. a. This objective was also met while working on the Poster Project focusing on students with disabilities and the varying positions of students, teachers, administrative staff, and community members in regards to exclusion or inclusion policies. 3. Students will be able to discuss the role(s) of educational leaders in affirming diversity and promoting social justice and inclusion 2 a. Both the PowerPoint Project and Poster Project allowed me to discuss diversity while promoting social justice and inclusion issues with my fellow cohorts. 4. Students will be familiar with the contributions made to our understanding of diversity in educational settings from theory and research exploring various forms of diversity including race, sex/gender, ethnicity, religion, and sexuality. a. While working on the PowerPoint Project I was able to research and come to a better understanding of diversity in educational settings with a specific focus on sex/gender and religion. 5. Students will be able to discuss various frameworks, organizational strategies, and structures, from which to approach human diversity in educational settings a. Again, this objective was met in both the PowerPoint Project and Poster Project which required me to research and specifically focus on frameworks, organizational strategies, and structures in educational settings which specifically deal with disabled students and students with diverse religious beliefs. 6. Students will use the resources of the library to further their research skills and knowledge of the literature related to issues of diversity and inclusion a. Both the PowerPoint Project and Poster Project required me to further my research skills and knowledge of the literature related to issues of diversity and inclusion. 7. Students will improve their skills in conducting professional presentations and leading group discussions a. In addition to the PowerPoint Project and Poster Project which gave me valuable experience in giving professional presentations, Over the length of this course, I 3 created thirty-seven concept maps using a specialized computer program. In fact, concept maps were such a major part of this course that I chose the design for my first poster project. Both Professor Jennings and Professor Kottke stated that the concept map form lent itself well to the poster format and shared that they may use my model for their own future presentations.
