This site provides information about our school as well as upcoming events in the monthly calendar. WE ARE A PEANUT/NUT & SCENT FREE SCHOOL PEANUT BUTTER/NUT SPREADS– There are children in our school with severe peanut and tree nut allergies. It is necessary to impose a ban on peanut butter as well as hazelnut spread in sandwiches, cookies and other sweets which may include these items. We do allow Wow Butter, which is a nut free alternative. If you are sending this please inform the teacher with a note or sticker. Because of the allergies we have in our building we are asking for your cooperation in keeping our students safe. Often classrooms have offers to bring in baked goods for treats or special occasions. We will not be able to give our students any baked goods made at home or made in a bakery. We are not always able to ensure these items have not come into contact with allergens. If you would like to send in a class treat that is labeled peanut/nut free on the manufacture packaging, you may make contact with your child’s teacher to make arrangements. We thank you in advance for your support with this. WE ARE A SCENT FREE SCHOOL - Many public places are now scent free. All schools in ASD-S including Lakewood Heights are scent free, and students are not permitted to wear perfume products of any kind to school. SIGN IN/OUT POLICY If you are picking up or dropping off your child anytime during the school day (after school starts and before dismissal) for an appointment, we would ask that you sign your child In/Out at the office. If you arrive during recess or lunch please come to the office before proceeding outside to pick you child up from the school yard. If a student arrives after 8:15, an adult will need to sign them in at the office. COMMUNICATION SURVEY ASD-S has created a survey for use by all schools regarding communication with families. This information will allow us to determine effective communication strategies for our community. If you would please take the time to complete the survey found on the menu bar of our school website it would be very helpful. The survey will be open from September 11 until October 9th YMCA AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM The YMCA offers an after school program in our school. Once the students are escorted to the after school program they are the responsibility of the YMCA. If you have any questions or concerns about the program you can contact the YMCA at 696-1175. BUS TRANSPORTATION Bus information for the current school year may be found on the Anglophone South School District website. If you are not able to find out your information please contact us. Thank you to all parents for respecting our district bus policy. The policy set by the district ensures that all children have 1 designated bus stop in the morning and one for after school. This will assist bus drivers and school personnel in ensuring that all children are delivered to the proper location safely. If you need a form for alternate transportation such as pick up at your home in the morning and delivery to a babysitter after school please ask your teacher for the Alternate Transportation form. District Office will NOT allow us to accept notes from parents requesting for the student to go to their friend’s house after school. There are no exceptions to this rule. NUTRITION POLICY All schools in Anglophone South follow a Nutrition Policy which ensures that schools provide students with access to healthy food choices at school. This policy is to help students make healthy choices and they are asking that parents help with this by thinking about Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating when preparing lunches. We are asking that pop or mini sips not be sent in lunches as they have no nutritional value. We try to send home the food your child does not want to eat so that you are aware of what they are eating. Please monitor how much you send as sometimes food is wasted. Please make sure whatever you send can be opened by your child. Ex: Oranges need to be peeled and split for them. Students have 20 minutes to eat their lunch. MILK PROGRAM Chocolate and white milk are offered at school at a cost of 40 cents. To keep things simple, students will pay for their milk on a monthly basis. A separate notice is included regarding dates and prices for the months ahead. We have to place our order on Thursdays so we need all money in by Wednesday morning. Please hold on to this notice. YOU MAY PAY FOR LONGER PERIODS IF YOU WISH. Please remember that payment for milk money cannot be combined with Lunch Money as the Home and School does not look after milk. A change for this year is that we will only be accepting cash payment for milk. RECESS AND LUNCH BREAKS All students are required to be outside during Morning arrival, Recess and Lunch Breaks. Many times children come to school without proper clothing. We ask for your help in seeing that appropriate clothing is worn to school throughout the school year. PARKING Please do not drop off students at the front door of the school as this is the drop off for buses only and parking spaces are available for staff. If you arrive after 8:15 you will be required to sign students into the building, you may park on Lensdale Crescent. We also ask that you please do not park on Lakeview Drive as the Crossing Guard cannot cross the children safely with cars parked along this road. All Vehicles MUST park in the back lot and come into the building from there during morning arrival and afterschool pick up. You are not permitted to park in the TRAFFIC CIRCLE at the back of the school as again, this is not safe for children who are getting dropped off. This is strictly a DROP OFF zone only. There are parking spaces behind the fence if you need to come in. When entering the traffic circle, we would ask you to drive to the furthest point, drop off your child and continue around. This will allow the traffic to continue to move, and cars do not feel the need to pass other vehicles which puts the safety of our students at risk. These rules are for the SAFETY of your children. I thank you for your cooperation. Teachers will ask you to move your car if you are in violation of these rules. SCHOOL PICTURES School Picture Day is on Wednesday, October 7th, Pictures will be done by Life Touch this year. UPCOMING SCHOOL HOLIDAYS Please note there will be NO SCHOOL For Students on Thursday October 8h and Friday October 9th. These will be Professional Learning Days for Teachers in Anglophone South School District. Monday, October 12th is Thanksgiving. SICK CHILDREN If your child is sick and will not be in school please call the school to let us know. When a child becomes ill or injured at school we will try to make him/her comfortable and call to make you aware of the situation. You may be asked to come and take your child home, so it is very important that the teachers have alternate numbers for calling during these situations. The demands of the teacher make it almost impossible to care adequately for children who are sent to school sick, so please do not send sick children to school. If your child has medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, severe allergies or any other conditions where special medication is involved, please inform the school so that we can make all staff aware. Students should never bring any medication to school. All parents who have children with medical concerns or allergies are asked to fill out Policy 704 documentation. Please contact the school if this applies to your child. TALK MAIL This system we use is called “School Connects”. This system will allow all families to receive our messages regardless of their phone carrier. We will be sending home telephone messages as well as email messages so please add your email to the contact form if you wish to receive emails through this system. If your telephone has call display, you will find that voicemails from our school will show up as Lakewood Heights. PNB may indicate that someone within our school may have tried to reach you. TERRY FOX RUN On Wednesday, September 30th, students will take part in a walk for the Terry Fox National School Run Day. We are asking the children to bring in any donations during the week of September 28th to October 2nd in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. HOT LUNCH PROGRAM Hot Lunch will begin next week. The Home and School looks after the Hot Lunch program at the school. It will be offered five days a week and all orders must be placed by THURSDAY of the previous week. SCHOOL RULES You will see our Code of Conduct below. Please review this with your child. Our aim is for Lakewood Heights School to be a safe place for children. Physical fighting is not permitted at our school. Students will have consequences if they choose to fight to solve their problems. There are always teachers on duty for children to go to. Throughout the year all students will receive information on Bullying. We will educate students on “what is bullying?” and how to handle these types of situations but we strongly encourage all parents to contact us if they feel there are any problems. We ask for your cooperation regarding this matter. If students choose to use violence to solve their problems you will be notified by the school and a discussion will take place about next steps. Code of Conduct I am responsible I am prepared I am respectful I am safe CONTACTING TEACHERS Please call the school or e-mail teachers directly if you have any questions or concerns. Although the teachers are not able to speak to you during the day, or may not be able to respond while they are teaching, they do their best to return your phone calls/e-mails at the end of the day. CAMPBELL SOUP LABELS Again, we will be collecting Campbell Soup labels at school. We are able to purchase educational materials using these labels. If you are able to contribute please send your labels into the school. SCHOOL CALENDAR A school calendar is attached. We believe that maintaining the integrity of the learning environment is a priority and that the use of cell phones and/ or electronic devices might detract from that priority. HOME AND SCHOOL The Home and School is a very active group at Lakewood Heights. The Home and School meet monthly and will be looking for new members to join them.
