PART I. General Setting
Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust is a very large tertiary level teaching hospital
providing specialist services to 3-4 million people. The Ophthalmology department
consists of 20 consultants covering the breadth of ophthalmic specialties. The
glaucoma team is a professorial unit headed by Professor Stephen Vernon and
Professor Anthony King.
We provide a comprehensive service in the management of both, complex medical
surgical glaucoma. Busy glaucoma clinics are undertaken each day by the consultant,
glaucoma fellow, residents and optometrists. The department is well equipped with the
latest imaging devices including retinal nerve fibre layer OCT and anterior segment
OCT. Therapeutic lasers are performed which include SLT, cyclodiode and YAG lasers.
We have 4 ophthalmic theatres housing Zeiss microscopes. High-volume
Phacoemulsification is performed. Modern day Moorfields safe-surgery augmented
trabeculectomy is undertaken as well as tube filtration surgery (Baervedlt and Ahmed).
Paediatric glaucoma is also managed. The EGS fellow will be expected to participate in
the assistance and performance of these procedures.
The department has an active glaucoma research portfolio and the fellow will be
expected to participate. We have various ongoing randomized clinical studies both
locally and nationally.
The EGS fellow will be trained in the management of both medical and surgical
glaucoma. They will be an integral part of the glaucoma team and actively participate
in clinical duties, glaucoma research and surgery.
