http://www.museologia-portugal.net
Postgraduate Studies
MSc in Museology (started in 1999/2000; 70 MSc dissertations completed)
PhD Studies in Museology (started in 2007/2008; 15 thesis completed)
Post-doctoral in Sociomuseology (started in 2009/2010; 3 Post-doctoral completed)
The MSc and PhD programmes were assessed and accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation
of Higher Education - A3ES. A3ES is a member of the European Consortium for Accreditation (ECA).
Aims and Objectives
The MSc and PhD programmes provides a broad academic and professional training in all aspects of Museology
and Sociomuseology, whilst encouraging students to reflect critically on the concept of the museum and its
associated practices.
It provides a balance of practice and theory for students from a wide range of academic backgrounds and
cultures. Museums are dynamic institutions. There is a constant need to rethink and redefine what a museum is
or can be.
We aim to provide the acquisition of knowledge, competence and skills for the application of concepts, theories,
methods and instruments of management in museological and eco-museological activities and research, as well
as participate in interdisciplinary teams of spatial planning in the area of heritage.
Programme Structure
Both study programme are intended to help students meet the objectives outlined above, and also to provide an
opportunity for them to achieve any additional personal objectives.
The compulsory core courses are designed to provide students with a good understanding, and critical
engagement with, contemporary museum practice and theory. A museum-based placement provides a context
for developing practical work-orientated skills. A supervised research project is undertaken in order to write the
dissertation/thesis, which allows specific practical, analytical and interpretive skills to be developed in more
depth.
Teaching Schedule
Taught courses are normally timetabled twice a month during 2 intensive days (Friday and Saturday).
Students are expected to use the remaining months to complete their placement and to work on their
dissertation/thesis.
The Institution and Faculty
The faculty members are holders of Ph.D. and Masters degrees and are experts in applied scientific research in
museological studies. One third of the faculty members are professionally involved in non-academic
museological activities (e.g., private firms, local and central administration). Their know-how and continuous
active involvement in conceptualisation, formulation, implementation and/or evaluation of museum activities,
and projects contributes significantly to both updating and reinforcing linkages between theories, policies and
practices. Every year we have guests speakers from other universities, whether Portuguese or foreign.
Future careers and graduate prospects
The MSc and PhD extends and enhances your employment opportunities in sectors such as management of
cultural institutions, liberal professionals in central and local administration in the area of planning and
management of cultural resources and scientific research in Museology.
Upon the successful completion of curricular and extra-curricular programs, the graduates are expected to be
able to demonstrate knowledge and perform a wide range of activities related with Museums activities or to
dedicate themselves to scientific research.

Internship/Museum Placement - During their first year, all masters students undertake supervised work
experience in a professional environment. The Museology Department ensures internships in a wide network of
museums in Portugal with which has agreements and works in collaboration since 1991. It also has protocols
with some museums in Brazil, in particular São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador.
Museology and Computation Laboratory
Museology and Computation Lab consists of 5 units where different subjects and technological resources are
presented by guest speakers of each specific area. The coursework is based on practical exercises, building
prototypes and study visits. The practical exercises are organized in a sequential way allowing a progression in
the understanding of technical procedures necessary for designing interactive modules in an exhibition.
Sociomuseology Research Center SRC
Mission Statement
Sociomuseology Research Center SRC was founded in 1993 with the objective to promote research in
Museology in general and in Sociomuseology in particular.
Since 1993, SRC produces Cadernos de Sociomuseologia, a major publication in Portuguese language devoted
to Museology (until the present moment we have 44 published titles) in close cooperation with researchers and
lecturers of Museology from Brazilian universities and museums. SRC also organizes national and international
scientific meetings on a regular basis. It is integrated in the MSc and PhD Programmes providing assistance to
lecturers and students.
Internationally, SRC develops activities in cooperation with MINOM - International Movement for a New
Museology, (affiliated organization of the International Council of Museums - ICOM).
Besides implementing research projects, SRC provides technical assistance and external services of
museological planning to public or private entities.
