About the Trainer
Frank Campbell, Ph.D., LCSW, C.T.
Dr. Campbell is the former
Executive Director of the Baton Rouge
Crisis intervention Center and the Crisis
Center Foundation in Louisiana, USA. He
is currently Senior Consultant for Campbell
and Associates Consulting where he
consults with communities on Forensic
Suicidology cases. It was due to his more
than twenty years of working with those
bereaved by suicide that he introduced his
Active Postvention Model (APM) most
commonly known as the LOSS Team
(Local Outreach to Survivors of Suicide).
His work with survivors and victims of
trauma has been featured in three
Discovery Channel documentaries. The
APM concept involves a team of first
responders who go to the scene of a
suicide and provide support and referral for
those bereaved by the suicide. The goal
has been to shorten the elapsed time
between the death and survivors finding
the help they feel will help them cope with
this devastating loss. The Active
Postvention Model and has shown to have
a positive impact on both the team
members (most often bereaved individuals
who have gotten help and now provide the
installation of hope to the newly bereaved)
as well as the newly bereaved. The model
has now been replicated in countries as
diverse as Australia, Singapore, Northern
Ireland, Canada and America.
Dr. Campbell is a past president
of The American Association of Suicidology
(AAS) and has received the Roger J.
Tierney award for service and the Louis I
Dublin Award in 2010 for his contributions
to the field of Suicidology. Campbell was
also selected by the International
Association of Suicide Prevention (IASP) to
receive the Dr. Norman Farberow award for
his international contributions on behalf of
those bereaved by suicide. He was Social
Worker of the year in Louisiana and the
first John W. Barton Fellow selected in his
hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
USA.

Sudden and Traumatic Death:
What Every Community
Needs to Know
Suicide remains the most common
sudden and traumatic loss that
communities experience annually.
It is through continuing commitment
and self-improvement that a
community can begin to address
the far-reaching impact of suicide
on survivors, families, and the
community as a whole. Through
lecture, power point, and guided
group discussion and activities, Dr.
Frank Campbell will teach
participants the basics of Crisis
Theory, the impact of suicide and
traumatic death on individuals,
families, and communities, and how
substance abuse may be impacting
a person in crisis and/or the grief
process. Further, Dr. Campbell will
provide participants with
information on local and statewide
efforts to prevent suicide and
intervene effectively for survivors of
suicide and traumatic death.
At the end of this workshop,
participants will be able to…
 Identify first responder coping
mechanisms, understand basic
Crisis Theory, survivors of suicide
grief process, and identify
prolonged and complicated grief
 Gain information about available
community involvement, local
efforts and statewide support from
the Ohio Suicide Prevention
Foundation, and information about
the local Suicide Prevention
Coalition
 Become more aware of the
developmental impact of traumatic
loss, the impact of family dynamics
in complex and complicated grief,
and the long-term consequences
for children including future risks
with regard to suicide
 Understand the most current data
for the U.S. and Ohio to better
equip participants for the battle
against suicide, and participant’s
role within a community that cares
