MEDIA RELEASE October 28, 2015 Vancouver New Music presents Tim Hecker Saturday, November 28, 2015; 8PM Pre-show chat: 7:15PM The Annex, 823 Seymour Street, 2nd floor, Vancouver “[Hecker creates] foreboding, abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around slow-moving notes and chords, like fissures in the earth waiting to swallow them whole”—New York Times Vancouver, B.C.—Montreal sound artist and electronic musician, Tim Hecker, will perform works-inprogress as part of the Vancouver New Music 2015-16 concert series on Saturday, November 28 at The Annex. The first time this new material will be performed live in Vancouver, Hecker’s inspiration is taken in part from the early works of Franco-Flemish Renaissance-era composer Josquin. Brought into the contemporary milieu by Hecker, these choral sounds will be reimagined with synthesizer, computer and guitar amplifiers utilizing significant sound intensity levels. Considered one of the most important musicians of his generation, his style is incredibly divergent—his work has been described as “cathedral electronic music”, “tectonic colour plates”, and “structured ambient”. With seven critically acclaimed albums to his name, he has also released three techo albums as Jetone early in his career. Since 1996, Hecker has produced audio works for Alien8, Fat Cat, Force Inc, Kranky, Mille Plateaux, Room40, and Staalplaat. To celebrate Room 40’s 15th anniversary the label is releasing an LP reissue of Hecker’s 2007 EP Norberg and 7” single “Apondalifa” on November 4–the first time the track will be available on vinyl in its extended form. Hecker grew up in Vancouver, moving to Montreal in the late ‘90s to attend Concordia University, he also holds a doctorate from McGill University in the cultural history of sound. He performed to a sold out room at VNM’s 2013 festival.
