As School Counselors, our primary role is to help students learn and develop to their highest potential, socially, emotionally, and academically. There are so many situations that can interfere with a student’s learning process; therefore we are here to help students work through those issues. We are trained to provide students with early interventions as well as preventative strategies so that “ALL” students benefit. Our curriculum is developed in order to reach students in three primary ways; classroom guidance, small group counseling, and individual counseling. Some counseling techniques include: skill building, goal setting, student contracts, discussions, technology and media, music, and journaling. We are looking forward to supporting your child’s success in school! We can be reached at (804) 261-5007 during regular school hours. Sincerely, Brookland Middle School Counseling Team Classroom Guidance Classroom guidance lessons are designed to foster the personal, social, academic, and career development of all students. Lessons will be needs based and concurrent with the needs of our school/ students/ population. Sample Group topics may include: Social Skills Anger Management Study Skills/ School Success Self-Esteem Grief/Loss Anxiety / Stress The following is just a sample list of lessons tentatively planned for this school year. Goal Setting Graduation Requirements/ Course Requirements Stress/ Anxiety Management Conflict Resolution/ Problem Solving Career Planning/ Exploration Small Group Counseling Small group counseling is available to ALL students in need, and may be requested by parents, students, or school staff. Parental permission is required. Groups are designed so that students may gather together in a confidential setting to work through an issue that is preventing them from doing their best in school. Students will have the opportunity to interact and connect with peers, practice new skills, provide and receive feedback, and set goals as needed. Because group counseling requires more time and preparation than other school counseling interventions, groups are extremely limited and are only for students that have issues impeding upon their academic success. Individual Counseling Individual counseling is available to ALL students in need, at the request of the student, parent, or staff member. Parents may refer a student by phone, e-mail, or in person. While students may see us at any time for brief discussions, parental permission is required prior to a series of planned sessions. Students are able to express concerns in a safe environment, where problem solving can then take place.
