A Christmas Carol

Money can’t buy happiness. I learned this while reading A Christmas Carol. It’s the main theme of the book. There is another theme though. The other theme is being kind and generous to others. Those are two very important lessons I learned while reading this book. Scrooge also had to learn these lessons. In the end Scrooge did. I’m now going to quote the book and show where scrooge starts to learn these lessons. “It matters little,” she said softly.” To you very little.

Another idol has displaced me; and if it can cheer and comfort you in time to come, as I would have tried to do, I have no just cause to grieve.“ In this part of the book Belle talks to scrooge and tells him he cares more about money then her and that it has displaced her. It goes along with the theme that money can buy happiness. “Mr. Scrooge!” said Bob; “I’ll give you Mr. Scrooge, the founder of the feast. In this part Bob’s family toasts Scrooge as the founder of the feast even though he doesn’t pay bob that much and is a grumpy old man. This goes along with the theme by showing that bob is happy with his life and thankful Mr. Scrooge gives him a job even if the pay isn’t good. So bob is happy with his life without a lot of money. It also shows that people can be kind and generous even if the person they are kind too are mean. “No, no,” said Scrooge,

“I am in earnest. Go and by it, and tell’em to bring it here that I may give them the direction where to take it. Come back with the man, and I’ll give you a shilling. Come back with him in less than five minutes and I’ll give you half-a-crown.” Scrooge tells a boy to go buy the prize turkey and have them bring it to him. He also says he’ll give the boy half-a-crown if he comes in less than five minutes. This shows that scrooge has learned to be kind and generous to other people because he is paying the boy well and is giving the turkey to Bob and his family. Those are some of the main points where scrooge starts to learn the two lessons.

This novel reflects a social issue in the Victorian Era because rich people didn’t care about the poor. The rich people were also very greedy. That’s a problem because without the rich people helping the poor the poor stay poor. The novel reflects this by having scrooge a greedy rich person who doesn’t care about the poor. He also doesn’t really help the poor either. So it reflects the issues of the Victorian Era by having scrooge have them. The novel theme connects to our world today because some people still think money can buy happiness. Also some people aren’t kind or generous. so the issues in the book somewhat connect to the issues in our world

today. That is also the reason why this book shows an important message for society today. It shows that money doesn’t buy happiness and we should be kind and generous and help out the poor.

I think this novel is considered a classic because scrooge faces issues that some people face themselves and it teaches us a lesson. When we read a book that teaches a lesson to a character it’s like we also learn the lesson. This book does just that and teaches us a lesson.

When books teach a lesson that’s a good one I think they should be a classic so people in one hundred years can learn the lesson too. This book has done just that and has become a classic because of the lesson people have learned from it. So I think what makes a book a classic is the lesson it teaches.

Reflection

One thing I like about this piece is my quotes. I like my quotes because they support the theme of the book well. I also like my quotes because they were some of my favorite parts of the book.

One thing my family and friends would like about this piece is the part where I explain why I think the novel is a classic and where I say what I think makes a classic book classic. I say this because I just think my family would like that.

One thing I need to change is how long my first paragraph is because it’s long but in the paper it said to make it three paragraphs so I followed that. I still think my first paragraph should have been shorter or split up.

One thing my teacher would notice about my writing is that I wrote a lot and that it doesn’t really keep the reader reading.

The Questions

How does the novel reflect the social issues of the Victorian era?

A social issue in the Victorian age is that the rich people didn’t care about the poor. The rich people were also very greedy. That’s a problem because without the rich people helping the poor the poor stay poor. The novel reflects this by having scrooge a greedy rich person who doesn’t care about the poor. The novel shows that scrooge is greedy and that he only cares about money and that if he doesn’t start caring about people awful things might happen.

How does the novel and its theme connect to our world today?

The novel theme connects to our world today because some people still think money can buy happiness and some people aren’t kind and generous. so the novels theme is basically issues we have to fix and things we should do more.

Why is this novel considered a classic?

I think this novel is considered a classic because scrooge faces issues that some people face themselves. Some of those issues are greed and ignorance. It also teaches people a worthy lesson that everyone should know. That lesson is money can’t buy happiness. I think since it teaches a good lesson that everyone thinks about that it became a classic. It also became a classic because people liked the lesson it taught and they just liked the book and good books with lessons become classics.
