Objective

Materials
 Girl in Gown graphic1 enlarged copy
 G Picture/Word Cards
 Glue or tape
 Green crayons/pencils/markers
 Gold and green glitter (optional)
State and model the objective
Pre-teach vocabulary words as needed (e.g.; A gown is a fancy dress). Say, “I have a friend named Gloria who
wants a gorgeous green gown. We are going to help Gloria decorate her gown with things that start with the /g/
sound like gorgeous, green, and gown. Listen for words that begin with the /g/ sound as we make Gloria’s
gown look gorgeous!”
Identify and emphasize target words and phrases within an activity
 Place the G picture/word cards face down.
 Have the students choose a picture, identify it, and glue it on Gloria’s gorgeous green gown. Emphasize
the /g/ sound at the beginning of each word (e.g., /g/, /g/, gloves).
 Have the students color the gown green and then add gold and green glitter (optional).
Read target words/patterns introduced in the activity
 As a class, write all the /g/ words that were placed on the gorgeous green gown. Ask the students to think
of other words that start with the /g/ sound.
 Read the words together having the students emphasize the /g/ sound as they read each word (e.g., /g/,
/g/, gloves).
Write about the activity using target words/patterns
 Complete the following sentence with the class: We put g___, g___, g____ on Gloria’s gown to make it
gorgeous.
 Read the sentence together. Provide support during reading by finishing the word after having the students
read the /g/ sound. Ask the students what sound they heard at the beginning of the words gloves, grapes,
grass, goat, gum, guitar, grill, ghost, Gloria, gown, and gorgeous.
