Chapters 12 ~ 15 Notes Pages and Analytical Paragraph, Chapter 15~ 4/20 Page one INCA

Directions: Respond to the questions below using details from the chapter.

SYNOPSIS: Dill doesn’t visit this summer; Atticus must attend an emergency session of the legislature; Cal takes the

Finch children to her church, wherein they discuss Tom Robinson’s wife Helen, and later, the “command of two languages” that Cal reveals. Aunt Alexandra comes to stay with the Finch family.

1.

How does the author, Harper Lee, poke fun at the character Scout, whose loss of Dill is “unbearable?”

2.

Scout notices Cal’s voice become “strange” (Lee 158). What has changed? Why has Cal’s voice changed? Can you connect this with Shaq’s comment about Ebonics?

1

3.

A. What literary device is employed in this phrase about Cal’s bonnet: “(t)he roses on her hat trembled indignantly” (Lee 158). _____________________________________________

B. What information is this phrase meant to convey to the reader?

4.

Vocabulary: (adj.) contentious: _______________________________________________________________

5.

The church takes up a collection for Helen Robinson, Tom Robinson’s wife. Why does she need the money right now? (Inference).

6.

Scout’s innocence leads her to state the “justice” that should be present but is actually lacking in the town. What does she think should solve the issue of Helen’s employment?

7.

What is “linin’?” (Lee 165) and why does the congregation sing this way?

8.

What is Harper Lee’s perspective on Ebonics, or AVE? (167). Use evidence to support your claim.

4-20 HOMEWORK ~ Read and answer questions through #15.

Chapter 13

SYNOPSIS: Aunt Alexandra comes to stay, presumably because Scout and Jem need some manners and some polishing. Alexandra has decided that it takes a Finch female to teach them to take pride in their ancestors. Atticus tries once to insist they listen to Alexandra’s perspective, but ultimately he cannot force his kids to do something he himself has no intention of doing (pp 177-179).

1

As we already know, words can have differing, even opposing meanings. “Ebonics,” a term coined by a Black psychologist to identify African American Vernacular English,(AVE) is itself sometimes thought of as a racist term because of its origin in the word, ebony.

AVE is the current identification most acceptable to most people, as far as my brief investigation has gone, though many African Americans and people of color have returned to the use of the term “Ebonics” as the word coined from within, rather than without, the culture.

1

(From this chapter, you will only be held accountable for knowing that Aunt Alexandra becomes a member of the

Finch household during the summer of the trial, and she and Atticus hold different opinions about what being a

“Finch” means.

9. What does Aunt Alexandra believe being a Finch means? (Find evidence in chapter 13.)

10. What does Atticus believe being a Finch means? (Find evidence in one of his conversations with his kids.)

Chapter 14

SYNOPSIS: Scout learns what the word “rape” means from Atticus; Alexandra wants Atticus to let Cal “go,” and

Atticus refuses. Dill runs away from “home” and arrives in Maycomb, hiding under a bed in the Finch household. He tries to explain to Scout why his mother and “new” father don’t need him around. Scout cannot understand what it is to be unneeded by her father and her (surrogate) mother, Calpurnia.

Reader’s Theatre, pages 190-192: three parts. Scout ~ pink; Dill ~ Green; Narrator ~ Yellow

(You will not be graded on any information in this chapter, but mark the page(s) that record the conversation Scout has with Atticus about another devastating word, “rape” -- this kind of conversation is a PATTERN we have witnessed several times so far in the novel.)

Chapter 15

SYNOPSIS: Dill is allowed to stay in Maycomb; Heck Tate (the sheriff) tells Atticus about Tom Robinson’s move to the county jail (basement of the courthouse); Atticus takes his reading lamp to the courthouse. Scout talks to Mr.

Cunningham about his entailment. Tom Robinson is protected by the Finch family, in one way and another.

11. What literary device is employed in the first paragraph of chapter 15? What purpose does it serve?

12. A. What is Atticus’ “dangerous question?”

B. How does this fit just perfectly into the portrait of Atticus’ character we are beginning to fill in?

13.

Read the discussion Atticus has with Heck Tate on page 195. What information can we infer Atticus already knows?

14.

Scout overhears Atticus saying to Alexandra, “… (I’m) in favor of Southern womanhood as much as anybody, but not for preserving polite fiction at the expense of human life” (Lee 196). Translate the meaning of this sentence, given your understanding of the first part of the courtroom scene we watched on Friday, April 10 th .

15.

What is the significance of the men’s attire (outward dress and appearance)?

Atticus’ fingers were trembling

The mob tells him Heck Tate on a “snipe hunt”

Atticus’ mouth was wide open (gaping)

Mr. Cunningham “squatted down and took me by both shoulders” (206).

Atticus leaning on the wall of jail, blowing nose “violently” - inference? Crying? Laughing?

No sense of Atticus as afraid

Did they use this phrase in the film?

I didn’t see this in the film, his astonishment…

He stood - did he take off his hat? He was wearing one in the film, but not in the book (white line on forehead).

Didn’t show this…

Mr. Underwood had Atticus covered all the time! Atticus the only adult on the side of Tom Robinson in the film.
