The family of Johannes Andersson B.1844 D.1876 and Kristina Olsdotter B. 1843, D.1908. Johannes and Kristina. Johannes was born on February 2, 1844 as number three in a family of eight children. The parents were farming in the village of Gördsbyn, Älgå. After school he worked on different farms. At the age of 22 he married the 23 years old Kristina Olsdotter, who was a neighbor. Her parents Olof Olsson and Britta Olsdotter had married in 1840. Kristina had two brothers Gustaf Hillarius and Olof, who died only four years old. After Johannes and Kristina were married, they moved to Kristina’s home, where their first child Anna, was born on December 8, 1866. After the birth of the second child, they moved to a farm where Johannes was a farm hand. Six children were born into the family. The youngest daughter died when she was about one year old. In a church book the priest has noted that Johannes was weak in health. After only ten years of marriage he died in pocks June 30, 1876. At that time they lived in the village Gördsbyn. Two month after Johannes’ death, she also lost her 8 month old girl, Beda. In 1878 they moved to another village and 1883 to Kristina’s mother, who was a widow. In 1882 her eldest daughter Anna emigrated to the USA together with her brother Anders. Kristina’s brother Hillarius moved in 1883. After some years all the five children had emigrated, and their mother never saw four of them again. Her son Karl returned to marry in 1899 and went back to Chicago with his wife Mari /Mary/ and her daughter Britt-Marie in 1900. Kristina’s home place. The place was called Jepperud. Size of land 21 hectare: 3 fields,18 forest. Wooden building with 1 room, 1 kitchen and 1 lounge. Value 19.500 Crowns. Owner: Axel Jordan. 1964 - . 1. Anna Stina Johannesdotter B.1866-08-12. Emigrated 1882-04-14 to USA. Her first name was Anna. She was 16 years old when she went to Estherville in Iowa together with her brother Anders 12 years old. In Ellsworth Emmet County they had two Uncles Nils and Carl Anderson, who had settled there in 1878 and 1888. Judith Brega Mc Mahon, living in Boone IA, searched her roots and found that Anna was her grandfather’s mother. She has been told that Anna became pregnant without being married and gave birth to a son Brendon Brega born 1888. The father was a married man, Richard Brega 1861-1948. He lived in Omaha Nebraska and had a one year old daughter Emily. It is told that Anna died shortly after her son’s birth. What we know is that she was not alive in 1908 when her mother in Sweden passed away. Anna’s name is not among her heirs. Richard and his wife took care of the baby and got four children of their own. I have a copy of a certificate of delayed birth registration, stating that Everitte Brandons Brega’s parent were Richard Everitt Brega and Anna Johnson. Emma Johannesdotter. B.1868-08-12. Emigrated 1884-06-16 to Emmetsburg, Iowa Emma is found in a chip´s list and her destination was Emmetsburg. She went by the ship Rollo from Christiania /Oslo/ At a visit in Estherville 2004 I went to the library in Emmetsburg and searched in their film records. I found an Emma Johnson in Census 1885 Emmet Township nr 100. She worked as a maid in a family. In 1900 United States Federal Census I found an Emma Johnson, that I hope is she, in Jackson, Lee. Iowa. She was married in1891. Her husband’s name is John A Johnson and they have three children. It is difficult to know exactly as the US has not exact data with day and month for birth but only estimated birth like about 1869 for Emma. There are other Emma Johnson born around that time but emigration year 1844 is right. 1900 United States Federal Census USA:s federala folkräkning från 1900 : Emma Johnson Namn: Ålder: Födelsedatum: Födelseort: Bodde år 1900: Härstamning: Kön: Immigrerade år: Släktskapsförhållande till familjeöverhuvud: Civilstånd: Emma Johnson 31 Jul 1868 Sweden (Sverige) Jackson, Lee, Iowa [Lee] White (Vit) Female (Kvinna) 1884 [1881] Wife (Maka) Married (Gift) Se Original Register Make/Makas namn: Vigselår: Gift antal år: Faderns födelseort: Moderns födelseort: Moder: antal barn i livet: Moder: Hur många barn?: Sysselsättning: Grannar: Hushållsmedlemmar: John A Johnson 1891 9 Sweden (Sverige) Sweden (Sverige) 3 3 Bildvy Visa andra på sidan Namn John A Johnson Emma Johnson Roy Johnson Mabel Johnson John Johnson Visa originalbild Visa tomt formulär Ålder 37 31 6 5 2 1910 United States Federal Census. Emigrated 188204-14. Anders was only 12 years old when he emigrated together with his sister Anna 16 years old. In 2003 Mrs Ruth Hacket, a genealogist in Estherville, helped me to find him in a local census for 1885. He lived in his Uncle Karl Anderson’s family, at that time 15 years old. His uncle Karl Anderson, born 1858, had emigrated from Sweden in December 1880 together with his fiancé Anna Jansdotter. They married after three month in Iowa and rented a farm there. After three years they bought 80 acres of land. After some years they owened 385 acres. They finished as a well known wealthy family. Carl had a brother Nels who came to Estherville, Iowa ten years before Karl and was a pioneer in that part of Iowa. Maybe they tried to save those youngsters from poverty in Sweden and asked them to emigrate. Anders mother died in 1909 in Sweden. The probate after her does not mention Anders as heir but well his siblings Emma, Charles and John. So I recon that he must have died as a young man. His brother Karl emigrated in 1888, was single and lived as lodger in Cook Ill. He went to Sweden to marry in 1900 and came back in 1901. I can not find when Anders left Estherville but believe that he might have gone to his brother in Chicago. I found him in 1900 United States Federal Census. At that time he is married with an eight years younger woman, Mary, and works in a piano factory as a polisher. His brother also works in that factory. 1900 United States Federal Census about Andrew Johnson Name: Age: Birth Date: Birthplace: Home in 1900: Andrew Johnson 30 Jan 1870 Sweden Chicago Ward 27, Cook, Illinois [Cook] View Original Record Race: Gender: Immigration Year: Relation to Head of House: Marital Status: Spouse's Name: Marriage Year: Years Married: Father's Birthplace: Mother's Birthplace: Occupation: Neighbors: White Male 1882 Head Married Mary Johnson 1897 3 Sweden Sweden View on Image View others on page Name Household Members: Andrew Johnson Mary Johnson View original image Age 30 22 I searched him in 1910 Census but did not find him but well in Deaths Index. They emigrated 1901-1104 and settled in Cook County, Ill. The daughter is known in Sweden as she inherited her mothers land and house and often visited the place.
