JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title:
Functional Skills Tutor (primarily English)

£22,432-£23,801 per annum

Summary of main purpose of role:
To drive an innovative and effective delivery model for English in one or more Rathbone
Centre(s), embedding engaging and differentiated approaches to learning, that are relevant
to local Centre(s) in the context of relevant Vocational Subject Sector Areas.
To carry out diagnostic assessments, devise weekly personalised programmes and deliver
these to our learners
The ideal candidate will be willing to primarily teach English Functional Skills up to and
including GCSE and be able to teach Functional Skills Maths when required.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching and Learning Delivery
1. Conduct diagnostic assessments for all new learners and devise weekly personalised
programmes to be delivered
2. Provide Information, advice, guidance and support to learners to identify and achieve
their learning aims
3. Deliver sessions in Functional Skills and in some cases GCSE English and carry out
the full range of teaching and learning activities that make up the learning experience
and associated preparation, planning, delivery, marking and assessment processes.

Course Operational Activities
1. Contribute to the learner experience of enrichment activities including visits,
placements, visiting speakers and other sessional activities through the embedding
of English into all learner led opportunities including volunteering, work related and
entrepreneurial activities as appropriate
2. Lead and implement the assessment framework for each course(s); this may mean
conducting internal verification for other Rathbone centres and/or moderation;
coordinating external examinations.
3. Coordinate enrichment activities for course(s); this may mean organising visiting
speakers
4. Prepare learners to take and pass their exams/ qualifications
5. Deliver other relevant course specific activities.
6. Cover the delivery of Functional Skills Maths when required
Curriculum Organisation
1. Contribute to securing the quality of the curriculum including ensuring learner
attendance, retention and achievement.
2. Drive course development and implementation.
3. Write and revise schemes of work, lesson plans and associated materials.
4. Be responsible and accountable for the completion and maintenance of learner
records including those associated with assessment and learning plans, attendance
and learner progress including their qualification
5. Provide training and support for student teachers/ volunteers so that they are able to
support and deliver engaging and differentiated programmes and harness the use of
modern technologies.
6. Carry out tasks associated with record keeping and the maintenance of Accurate data
7. Contributing to all learner progress reports.
8. Participate in the writing and completion of the Self-Assessment Report.
9. Contribute to the learner recruitment and selection process including enrolment,
registration and the production and maintenance of course information sheets.
10. Regularly mark and feedback to learners on their work
11. Implement assessment procedures and prepare for internal and external moderation
and verification including attendance at associated meetings.
12. Contribute to and overseeing learner evaluation activities.
13. Contributing to the maintenance of course files.
14. Attending and contributing to course team meetings from time to time.
15. To participate in the Rathbone national Teaching of English working group.
16. Ensure physical teaching environment is clean, tidy and fit for purpose and all
equipment is in full working order and report/action any that are in need of repair
17. Ensure appropriate resources are available in order that young people can achieve
success in their learning
