Hokie Parent submission, Career Services, Spring 2005 issue JobSmarts for juniors: A spring semester series of programs to prepare juniors for senior year Career Services is offering a new series of programs for juniors Sunday, April 10, through Thursday, April 14, to help them get ready for the job search at the start of senior year. “Many students don’t realize that employers are visiting campus actively recruiting graduating students as early as September and October prior to May graduation,” said Bevley White, assistant director at Career Services, who is coordinating the programs. Ms. White indicated that students need to be aware of this as juniors, and this series of programs is designed to help them be ready and confident about starting the job search. Several of the sessions feature employers who will talk about what they look for when recruiting new graduates and the hiring process in their fields. Early in fall semester, there are many programs available to students that help them become aware of career options, and that also feature employer speakers and panels discussing their industries. “I see many seniors in spring semester who are really interested in the topics of those fall programs, and were aware they were offered, but chose not to take advantage,” said Catherine Copeland, assistant director at Career Services. “This is a great effort to give students a wake-up call while they are still juniors.” Pam Herrmann, assistant director at Career Services, added, “students who wait until late in senior year to start their job search can have success, but they have also missed many opportunities and they might regret that.” The JobSmarts programs: JobSmarts for Juniors Kick-off Event Employer panel and panel of graduating seniors share advice about conducting a successful job search.
