Student Congress Meeting Minutes Colt Forum 7 November 2011 Meeting called to order at: 4:03 Agenda: Prayer Open Floor Approve Minutes Campus Connection: Sheryl Smee Legislation Updates Standing Committees Announcements Michael Geiger opened in prayer Open Floor: none Campus Connection: Sheryl Smee: Director of Alumni Relations Anyone with 24 units is considered an alumni. The alumni association is a way for graduated students to have a place back in the school. It gives you places that you can tie back in and be involved. The second place is to grant scholarships, rebuild buildings/restore stuff, etc. Tuition Freedom day comes from the alumni. The third reason it exists is to give you ways to communicate with each other once you’ve graduated, thus it serves as a connection with the university. Collaborations with current students: Various events are partnered with ASB. Homecoming brings alumnus and students together and serves as connections for jobs and internships. Tuition Freedom Day was 77.5% last year which means more alumni are collaborating to help out and bring down tuition costs. This year we’ll have an event where you receive a t-shirt and write thank-you notes. Alumni: Can stay connected through Alumni Auxiliaries which are 15 clubs in different interest areas, for example music, sports, business, etc. Homecoming is the perfect time for reunion groups to reminisce about college life. Besides Homecoming there are six area events in different cities throughout the country and sometimes around the World (Japan). Technology is another great way to keep everyone connected. Alumnus want to meet students so don’t be bashful about walking up and talking to them during Homecoming weekend. If you want to go to one of the alumni breakfasts sign up. Some classes get together and raise scholarships–this year one raised $300,000. Research associates has been raising research money and has supported 30 students in research for biology and chemistry. The alumni giving rate is the number they use to see how alumni are satisfied with the university. Companies use this number to determine whether or not they will donate money to PLNU. The more alumni giving to the university, the more money the university can receive from other companies. Normally we tend to be running way ahead of Azusa, Biola, but are tied with SPU and Whitworth and are getting creamed by Westmont, Wheaton, and Calvin. Technology: We have online directory for alumnus that is on the portal where you can access people’s information. Also, you’re PLNU addresses stay with you for the rest of your life. The website has information about events and news. Our Facebook account posts information about what’s going on on campus, with alumni, and we post pictures. Question and Answer: Geiger: How do you rent the alumni house? Response: That’s where our offices are located. If you want to make a reservation you have to call the office and ask for availability. Can stay for free but if you can give $35 a night or $50 for the master bedroom then that would be great.
