Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW) (Acting as Lead Partner to the Metal Links Project, funded by the Wales-Ireland INTERREG 4a programme) JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Community Archaeologists (Metal Links Project – Forging Communities Together) 2 posts available, one of which must be Welsh speaker LOCATION: Office-based work will be at RCAHMW offices in Aberystwyth. Project work will principally be carried out in North Ceredigion and Anglesey (Amlwch), with some time also spent in North West Wales as well as with project partners in South East Ireland. REPORTING TO: Director of Projects (RCAHMW) DURATION: Fixed term appointments to 31.1.2014 SALARY: Band C - £20,100 to £25,200 per annum HOURS OF WORK: Full time posts 37 hours per week JOB PURPOSE AND ROLE: The post holders will play their part in fulfilling the RCAHMW’s commitment to a number of objectives in the Metal Links project. The principle duties of the community archaeologists will be to engage with community groups in the establishment and promotion of a range of initiatives relating to the archaeology (all periods) of former Metal Mining areas. ABOUT THE METAL LINKS PROJECT: RCAHMW is the lead partner in the Metal Links project. The other project partners are Copper Coast GeoPark (Co. Waterford, Ireland), Wicklow County Council (Ireland), GeoMôn (Anglesey, Ynys Môn, Wales), and Pentir Pumlumon (North Ceredigion, Wales). The main aims of the project are: 1. To develop and promote joint socially inclusive opportunities for the sustainable regeneration of former metal-mining communities through tourism as well as creating local awareness and pride of place. 2. To promote and encourage new cultural and educational links including exchanges and interaction based on mining, archaeology, geology and cultural heritage. 3. To share new ways of telling the ‘story’ of the mining areas and hinterlands with the view towards a unique tourism product contributing towards economic regeneration. KEY TASKS: 1. Engage with community groups in project areas to establish initiatives that relate to the archaeology (all periods) of metal mining areas. This will principally relate to site and building survey and investigation, but may encompass other activities such as genealogical and historical research and excavation. 2. Work with RCAHMW staff and other organisations, to organise and carry out initiatives that relate to the archaeology (all periods) of metal mining areas. 3. Work with community groups to best promote and present the archaeology of their areas through modern and sustainable digital techniques and the internet. 4. Work with all project partners to establish links and cultural exchanges based on mining, archaeology, geology, commercial and cultural heritage. 5. Work with the Uplands Archaeology Initiative project manager at RCAHMW to make available and present to communities local environmental histories, obtained through a programme of paleo-environmental analysis. 6. Work with communities to identify, develop and promote a series of walking/cycle trails that improve the awareness of the mining landscapes. PERSON SPECIFICATION: The successful candidates must be permitted to work in the UK by being either a UK National, a British Protected Person, an Irish or Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the EEA (European Economic Area). He/she will also be able to demonstrate that they meet the following essential criteria for the post. Applicants who have a disability and who meet the essential criteria for the post will be shortlisted. ESSENTIAL: 1. Qualification to degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as archaeology, history, architecture, geography etc. Alternatively, related experience at an appropriate level. 2. Experience of engaging and working with community groups. 3. Experience of developing, managing and implementing projects. 4. Experience of promoting and publicising activities and events including the use of latest technological developments such as blogs, facebook etc. 5. It is essential that at least one of the post holders be able to communicate in Welsh. 6. Hold a full UK driving licence. DESIRABLE: 1. Experience in archaeological and building survey.
