The Associate Vice President for Student Life Services / Dean of Students, is one of three senior
administrators in the Division of Student Services with primary responsibility for creating a vibrant
campus life for a growing and increasingly diverse student body at the University. Opportunities to do
so include living/learning communities, modern residence hall and dining facilities, a new student
union, leadership development, and support to students in need. The incumbent is responsible for
human resource, facility, fiscal, and administrative management of the division which includes
approximately 30 administrative faculty, 58 classified staff, 8 graduate assistants, and 250 student
employees. The Associate Vice President provides leadership, oversight, direction and support to all
personnel within the following units: Associated Students (including Student Government, Student
Activities, ASUN Bookstore, Greek Life and Campus Escort Services); Assistant Dean of Students;
New Student Initiatives;; Residential Life, Housing and Food Services; Student Union; and Student
Conduct (including Alcohol Prevention Programs) . This position serves in a Dean of Students
capacity handling emergencies and is the on-call person for Police Services when incidents involving
students occur. In addition, the Associate Vice President serves as the President's designee to review
the recommendations of student conduct board hearings, and issue the final disposition of the case.
The Associate Vice President serves as the President’s designee to review requests for approval of
alcohol at events held on campus. This position reports to the Vice President for Student Services.

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The incumbent has the broadest level of autonomy and authority to make decisions regarding student
life issues on campus, including the determination of first responses to students, their families and the
university community in emergency situations.
Impact:
Decisions and judgments in this area significantly impact the quality of student life on campus.
Decisions affect the academic mission, safety, social environment, and public image of the university.
The areas supervised by this person have a particularly high level of public visibility and decisions
have significant consequences for students and the campus at large. For example, the alcohol policy,
escort, housing, and student conduct affect the safety and protection of students, campus personnel
and property. Decisions on discipline, student union activities and housing policies affect the
recruitment and retention of students as well as the campus at large. Some departments are highly
vulnerable to legal action and good decisions can prevent lawsuits.
Judgments may result in poor student retention and increased time to degree. Decisions or
judgments in personnel and budget matters profoundly affect department capability, morale and
effectiveness. Due to the large self-support budgets, decisions determine whether the auxiliary
departments maintain fiscally sound operations.
