Denver Alumnae Club of Pi Beta Phi Summer 2008 Newsletter www.pibetaphidenver.org www.pibetaphi.org Aloha Denver Pi Beta Phi Alumnae, Ring Ching in the 2008-2009 year of the Denver Alumnae Club! It is my pleasure to serve a second year as President with the ’08-’09 executive board, made up of driven, passionate and dedicated angels. The executive board is thrilled to start a new year planning to grow not only in the number of members, but to strengthen our bonds as women, friends, philanthropists and leaders in the community. We are all passionate about this organization and are guided by the values and a mission that still holds true more than 140 years after our founding. Save the Date: Pi Beta Phi Luau, September 10th In order to kick off our year in true Pi Phi fashion, our first fall event will involve all clubs represented by the Denver Area Council of Pi Beta Phi. This will be a Pi Phi event like you’ve never seen! You won’t want to miss it! “Friends and Leaders for Life” is the official tag line for Pi Beta Phi. It is our goal that the Denver Alumnae Club offers each member many opportunities to develop new friendships and enrich old ones. We hope to create a place to strengthen leadership skills and service. As individuals, we each made a lifelong commitment to sisterhood, and it is our mission to give the Pi Phi women of Denver the opportunity and organization to do so. We encourage you to stay in the loop by frequently visiting our website. If you choose to be involved on a social level only, please visit the ‘Events’ section of the website. Additionally, if you would like to have a richer Pi Phi alumnae experience, check out the ‘Philanthropy’ section for current opportunities. If you know any sisters living in Denver who are not involved, please direct them to the membership page to obtain a membership form and information on how to join the club! Finally, if you have any questions, check out ‘Contact Us’ for a list of current officers. Mahalo for your continued support for the Denver Club – We are looking forward to a wonderful year and to seeing you all at the Luau! We are at an exciting time in Denver Club history – in 2010, we celebrate our 100th anniversary as an alumnae club, and we have an opportunity to grow our membership numbers. Remember – the more dues-paying members we have, the bigger and better we can celebrate our anniversary. Ultimately, this means we need your help – GET INVOLVED! Rediscover our sisterhood, make some new friends, and share your time and talents. Haven’t paid dues for a couple of years? Know a Pi Phi who hasn’t been active in an alumnae club? GET THEM INVOLVED! Please help us accomplish more great things together – without you, the Denver Club would never have made it to 100 years! Included in this newsletter, you’ll find the 2008 – 2009 Membership Form. Please take a few moments to fill it out and send it to us with your dues. If you’ve already done so – THANK YOU!! Don’t miss out on the fun of the 2008 – 2009 year! Questions? Our local philanthropy is The Gathering Place (TGP), Denver’s only daytime drop-in center for women and children who are experiencing homelessness or poverty. Pi Phi’s experience with TGP includes serving afternoon snacks to the women and children throughout the year as well as holding drives to collect products like toiletries to donate to the group. Mark these dates on your calendar now so that you can be one of the smiling faces serving afternoon snack: September 22, 2008 November 12, 2008 January 26, 2009 March 18, 2009 Stay informed by the meeting invitations to help us gather different donation items for the women who rely on TGP throughout the entire club year. Champions Are Readers (CAR) will be moving to a new school this fall. We are excitedly planning for an October program at Cheltenham Elementary School! This is a fun and truly rewarding program to be involved in as a Pi Phi Alumnae – so keep your eyes and ears open for all the details as we get everything established with our new students. Questions? Contact Amy and Ashley! Email us at: philanthropy@pibetaphidenver.org Did Someone Just Say, “I Sure Could Use Some Adventure?” This year’s event calendar is designed especially to satisfy the adventurous spirit! We want to give each member the opportunity to enrich the mind, body and spirit at a number of fun gatherings. We hope to take you away from the daily grind and reconnect you with the great fun of Pi Phi. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon and often! Have You Had Trouble Receiving Evites? Are You Looking for Something Other Than Meetings to Get Involved In the Club? Help us keep our database updated! Send your new information to our membership co-chairs at membership@pibetaphdenver.org. The Interest Group is alive and well in Denver Alumnae Club life! Our club uses Evite.com to send out invitations for meetings. We ask that you take a few minutes to register with Evite the next time you receive an invitation. By registering, you allow us to see not your actual name instead of just your email account name. This is very important for meeting preparation – making nametags of if we need to contact anyone directly about a program. An Evite Etiquette Request of You Because we use your Evite RSVPs to plan food, drink and other accommodations for each event – we ask that you try to respectfully RSVP to the best of your ability no later than 4 days before any event. Recruitment Information Forms (RIF) As Pi Phi Alumnae, we are eligible to write a RIF for any potential new member who demonstrate Pi Phi values and who would be strong candidates for membership. Chapters depend upon this information to help identify the most qualified potential new members. RIFs are available on the Pi Beta Phi Web site. What to send? * The completed RIF and a picture if possible should be sent directly to the pertinent collegiate chapter. * Mail the RIF to the attention of the vice president of membership. Chapter address information and recruitment dates are available on the Pi Beta Phi Web site or by calling Headquarters. Keep in mind: * Do NOT contact the chapter during recruitment to inquire about progress. * Do NOT expect to see a bid list from the chapter. * Any violations of Panhellenic rules by Alumnae may cause the chapter to be penalized. If you have additional questions about RIFs, there is a great review in the summer 2008 edition of The Arrow. Have you seen Pi Phi’s presence as a Premiere Sponsor on www.theliteracysite.com? Go to this site each day and simply click on “Click Here to Give – It’s Free” to help promote literacy and provide free books to children in need! Twilight Angels ~ This dinner group is for Pi Phi’s initiated in the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s; and they meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm. Dinner is Dutch-treat, so please bring cash. To get connected, contact Sue (rspenner@msn.com) or Linda (yourmortgagelady@yahoo.com). Moonlight Angels ~ This group is typically frequented by young alumnae and meets for happy hour once a month. Contact Carrie (carriedaech@yahoo.com) to get connected. Playgroup for Kids and Their Pi Phis ~ An interest group for Pi Phi Moms or nannies with young children. If you would like to get connected to this group and take part in some kid-friendly fun, contact Tish (tvanoni@hotmail). Pi Phi Book Club ~ This group is for members of every generation and generally meets once a month to enjoy company and discussion of a recent read. Please email membership@pibetaphidenver.org to get on the mailing list as this group is reorganizing under a new leader, Susan Crews, this fall. We’re hoping to keep all of our club communications efficient, effective and relevant this year. We have begun to consider different ways to move away from traditional mailings for those members who prefer to not receive paper communications. If you’re an online junky of just hate papers around the house – let us know at the next meeting you attend. Not only can we hope to save some trees, but we may also be able to save some of our club monies traditionally spent on printing and postage fees. This shift may work if our members continue to maintain updated contact information with our Membership team. We do not want to trim some of our traditional mailings if that means we sacrifice any connection with our members. Think on it! Important information inside – open immediately!
