This course will meet five Saturdays per semester to develop corps members’ competencies in the Teaching as Leadership (TAL) framework, the TAL impact model, and our developing understanding of Transformational teaching. While much of corps members’ University development is rooted in instructional methods and teacher execution, the Internship in Transformational Leadership & Teaching course develops teachers’ ability to foster the more enduring qualities of access, advocacy, and habits of mind. Teach For America Baltimore’s Relationship with Johns Hopkins University School of Education To ensure that University learning is well aligned and relevant to corps member needs, Teach For America Baltimore and The Johns Hopkins University School of Education collaborated in the creation of the Internship in Transformational Leadership & Teaching. As a result, University course work is not an extension of the Teach For America experience, but a core component of Teach For America’s plan for developing teachers’ classroom leadership. Since this course is worth one graduate credit hour, corps members should expect between fourteen and sixteen hours of outside work for this class over the course of each semester. Attendance Policy Teach For America and The Johns Hopkins School of education have invested a lot of energy and thought into creating a professional development program that will align with corps members’ needs and push corps members’ skills and thinking around transformational teaching. Accordingly, attendance at Internship in Transformational Leadership & Teaching is critical to corps members’ development as teacher. Passing the Internship in Transformational Leadership & Teaching course is required for certification and corps members’ standing in the course depends upon regular attendance, engagement in the sessions, and completion of course work. This course is required for certification under our current alternative certification agreement with the Maryland State Department of Education. Corps Members are required to attend five Internship in Transformational Leadership & Teaching classes per semester. Corps members who miss a Saturday class must arrange to attend one of the makeup dates indicated below. If a corps member misses a Saturday class and does not attend a makeup, ten points will be deducted from the corps member’s attendance grade for the month of the absence. Syllabus Guidelines 3 As with other required Teach For America development events, corps members who are going to be absent from an Internship in Transformational Teaching class must complete the missed event survey on TFANet. Tardy Policy Since this course only meets five times over the semester, prompt arrival is critical. Arriving more than fifteen minutes late will constitute a late arrival. For every late arrival, five points will be deducted from a student’s attendance grade for the month of the lateness. Internship in Transformational Leadership & Teaching Makeup For corps members who are absent from Internship in Transformational Leadership & Teaching due to religious observances, illness, or family emergency, an alternative internship date will be offered. Absence from the alternative date will constitute an absence from the class. Corps members must provide advance notice of their intent to attend the alternative date for the Internship in Transformational Leadership & Teaching course by filling out the missed event survey on TFANet and provide justification of absence (i.e doctor’s note, etc.). In the event such changes become necessary, information will be posted on the School of Education web site. Classroom Accommodations for Students with Disabilities The following statement must be included on all syllabi exactly as written below: If you are a student with a documented disability who requires an academic adjustment, auxiliary aid or other similar accommodations, please contact Jennifer Eddinger in the Disability Services Office at 410-516-9734 or via email at soe.disabilityservices@jhu.edu. Statement of Diversity and Inclusion The following statement must be included on all syllabi exactly as written below: Johns Hopkins University is a community committed to sharing values of diversity and inclusion in order to achieve and sustain excellence. We believe excellence is best promoted by being a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff who are committed to creating a climate of mutual respect that is supportive of one another’s success. Through its curricula and clinical experiences, the School of Education purposefully supports the University’s goal of diversity, and, in particular, works toward an ultimate outcome of best serving the needs of all students in K-12 schools and/or the community. Faculty and candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to diversity as it relates to planning, instruction, management, and assessment. IDEA Course Evaluation The following statement must be included on all syllabi exactly as written below: Please remember to complete the IDEA course evaluation for this course. These evaluations are an important tool in the School of Education’s ongoing efforts to improve instructional quality and strengthen its programs. The results of the IDEA course evaluations are kept anonymous— your instructor will only receive aggregated data and comments for the entire class. Typically, an email with a link to the online course evaluation form will be sent to your JHU email address approximately 85% of the way through the course. Thereafter, you will be sent periodic email reminders until you complete the evaluation. The deadline for completing the evaluation is normally one week after the last meeting of class. Please remember to activate your JHU email account and to check it regularly. (Please note that it is the School of Education’s policy to send all faculty, staff, and student email communications to a JHU email address, rather than to personal or alternative work email addresses.) If you are unsure how to activate your JHU email account, if you’re having difficulty accessing the course evaluations or you haven’t received an email reminder by the day of the last class, or if you have any questions in general about the IDEA course evaluation process, please contact Rhodri Evans (410-516-0741; idea@jhu.edu).
