Wright State University Student Government Minutes January 21, 2014 Week # 2 1.Call to Order @ 7:06 2.Attendance 1.Sukhmanjit Singh, Kyle Powell, JB Saul, Christine Ton, Gabriel Riegel, Zena Fadel, Lauren Ouwerkerk, Kaliah Ware, Peyton Jones, Anthony Hinojosa, Megan Gillespie, Emily Bingham, Amaha Sellassie, Fady Al-Banna, Jennifer Benson, Megan Ater, Amanda Short, Erika Leitz, Jordan Young, Casey Babbitt, Michelle Coale, Elizabeth Mathews, Matthew Johnson, Commuter Proxy, Meridith Brackman, Jackie Kucrika, Estrella Alvarez 2.Absent: Karli Lightner, Jordan Young, Ryan Rushing, Megan Gray, Andrea Sachett 3.Approval of the Minutes 1.Approved 4.Committee Reports 1.Michelle Coale (CEHS): Reyclemania! 1.Kick-off: January 30, 2014 from 10-3pm in Student Union Atrium 2.Student Government needs to participate and push for campus conservation 2.Kyle Powell (VP): 1.Student Affairs Committee (Chair Erika Leitz) 2.Campus Completion Committee 1.Committee broken down into 4 sub-committees 2.Discussed criteria on how to help students ‘cross the finish line’ by receiving their degrees. 3.Undergraduate Academic Policies Committee 1.Discussed a policy that if a student has a certain GPA and ACT score, then they will have direct admits from high school into their college. 1.An Ohio Legislation dealing with this policy will be discussed in future meetings. 3.Erika Leitz (Student Affairs): 1.Student Affairs Committee (Chair Erika Leitz) 1.Discussed the 3rd party fee when using a certain debit card (Visa) 1.Discussed ways on how to make this fee more aware and obvious to students (warning). 2.Homecoming King and Queen 1.Discussed adding more responsibility to the Homecoming Queen and King 1.Responsibilities would include working with admissions and visiting high schools to recruit students for WSU. 3.Wright State T-shirts 1.Create campus incentives for wearing Wright State T-shirt (like wolf shirt) 4.Discussed making Raider-Connect more efficient 5.T-shirt Donation Swap 1.Donate other university shirts and swap for a Wright State shirt. 2.Swap will help promote Wright State pride 6.New Slogans to promote Wright State pride 4.JB Saul (Chief of Staff): 1.University Diversity Council 1.Meeting tomorrow on January 22, 2014: Agenda 1.Funding for inclusion and fusion grants 2.Social Entrepreneur funds 1.Grant funds to startup businesses to help better the local area. 3.MM14 Conference: Immigration and Migration 1.Possible keynote speakers for immigration and migration. 2. Involved with Millennium Conference 4.Carnegie Classification 5.Campus Climate Survey Committee 1.More discussion to come 5.Sukhmanjit Singh (President): 1.Campus Completion Committee 1.Criteria 3: Advancing opportunities for higher learning outside the classroom 1.Committee processing information (10 yrs. ago to now stats) on how student organizations have developed. 1.Presenting information tomorrow! 2.Committee will be discussing how student organizations develop and how much money they should get. 3.Involvement from Student Government!! 2.Orientation this year will be run through Amy Barnhart 1.Change student orientation leader guide 1.Make Orientation all day 2.Kyle Powell and Sukhmanjit Singh will be meeting with Amy Barnhart on Monday 1.Discuss involvement of student organizations; make orientation more student focus and about the life at Wright State 3.Open forum 1.Michelle Coale (CEHS) and Lauren Ouwerkerk (Speaker of House): Set up like organization fair, so orgs can talk to students; have more Greek representation. 2.Matt Johnson (COMS): Make orientation more than one day (require it, especially for those planning to live on campus). 3.Peyton Jones (Secretary of House): Have clearer and better communication with student orgs. 4.Kailah Ware (Assistant Speaker of House): Make orientation like how college should be. 5.Commuter Proxy: Make more fun and attractive; focus on students. 6.Anthony Hinojosa (Academic Affairs): Allow for students to leave earlier if they find information not relevant to them. 4.If any more questions, concerns, or comments, email Kyle or Sukh by the end of this week! 6.Christine Ton (Associate Chief Justice): 1.Relay for Life 1.Chair positions available (i.e. entertainment…) 1.Entertainment Chair will be planning the entertainment hours for Relay for Life. 2.If interested, then attending meeting nest Thursday at 6:30 in Student Union 1.Let Christine know if need contact information! 2.Student Government won holiday challenge for Relay for Life!!! 1.February Frenzy (not yet announced) competition 1.Continue to sign-up (Christine will send an email to those who haven’t yet signed up)! 5.Report Discussion 1.Emily Bingham (Campus Culture): 1.Question about Kyle’s committee, dealing with graduate rates: Will students of color and students with economically disadvantage backgrounds, who have a harder time graduating, be discussed in committee? 1.Kyle Powell: Dr. Barrett will be sitting on committee. 1.Committee splitting up into different categories, discussing this topic. 6.Public Forum 1.Spencer Brennan: 1.Executive Committee for the new classroom building 2.New furnishings (furniture, paintings etc…) for building will be decided tomorrow (Wednesday January 22, 2014) and in upcoming meetings. 1.Public presentation (fixtures meeting) in December for a lot of stakeholders. 1.Student input was presented (campus feedback). 1.Didn’t like what was changed (floors, walls etc…) and will be coming up for re-approval (facilities and planning re-evaluating) tomorrow. 2.Let Spencer know of any changes or ideas on fixtures by tomorrow! 3.JB Saul: Will Wright State school spirit be reflected on new building? 1.Spencer’s response: Picking furniture will allow for more opportunity for design. However, there is push back from architect and facility planning for Wright State branding and imaging. 1.More Wright State imagery on second floor (around where first year staff members and math studio will be). 2.Would like to work on Wright State branding on first floor (around halls and auditoriums). 7.Old Business 1.Discussed By-law changes 1.Changes already discussed in Cabinet Meeting 2.Additional proposed changes: 1.Director of Campus Culture to Director of Diversity Affairs 2.Director of Web Communications to Director of Communications to Marketing 3.Article II, C: Have Vice President still keep in contact and maintain relationships with other universities (Michelle Coale). 4.Article II, G and Article III, H: contradicting (Spencer Brennan) 1.Article II, G: left out President 5.Article V: Create two sub-sections for Veterans and Athletics (Anthony Hinojosa). 6.Article VII, B: Re-word (Kyle Powell). 7.Articles I-V: Create section for committees (Spencer Brennan). 1.Committees only mentioned in this proposed section. 8.Article VIII, F: Strike out (Emily Bingham). 9.Article V, D: Remove ‘mission statements of Student Government’ because SG doesn’t have one (Spencer Brennan). 10.Article XII: Look at passed Resolution 13-11 to include more duties (Spencer Brennan). 11.Article XIII, O: Moved to Assistant Speaker of House Duties (Article XIV) (Lauren Ouwerkerk). 12.Article XV, E: Change ‘3 out of 5’ to ‘5 out of 8’ and ‘per quarter’ to ‘per semester’ (Lauren Ouwerkerk). 1.F: Change ‘May Daze’ to ‘April Craze’ 3. Get feedback for By-laws from House of Representatives (Spencer Brennan). 4.Stopped reviewing By-laws at Duties of Senate (pick up where we left off next SG meeting). 8.New Business 1.Resolution 14-01: Resolution to Establish a Standing Committee for Supplementary Educational International Students (Introduced by Fady Al-Banna). 1.Committee will include staff, faculty, and international students. 2.Resolution will improve academics and international student’s ability to graduate from WSU. 3.Estrella Alvarez (UCSAC): Use of Dictionaries in classrooms 4.Sukhmanjit Singh (President): Assess whether support services are helping international students. 5.Motion moved by Michelle Coale (CEHS); Seconded by Casey Babbitt (Boonshoft Senator) 1.Motion Passed(In- favor: Unanimous) 2.Resolution 14-02: Resolution to Adjust the Cost for Temporary Accommodations for Campus Housing for International Students (Introduced by Fady Al-Banna). 1.Background: 1.One week in Hamilton Hall= $150 2.Some international Students just stay a couple of days to fill out paperwork, and then find more permanent housing off-campus. 3.Other college campuses have less international students than Wright State, but include better service. 2.Charge per night, not per week. 1.Instead charge $22 per night. 3.Resolution to satisfy international students. 4.Gary Dickstein (Advisor): 1.Concerns about campus housing operating like a ‘hotel’. 2.In some cases, international students will get refunded the difference if they don’t end up staying the entire week. 3.Other universities? 5.Sukhmanjit Singh (President): Campus housing winter services 6.Resolution tabled for further review: Jackie Kucirka (Residential Senator); Seconded by Elizabeth Mathews (CONH). 1.Motion Passed (In-favor: Unanimous) 3.Resolution 14-03: Resolution to Establish an International Student Advisory Board (Introduced by Fady Al-Banna). 1.Resolution to help make bridges between UCIE and SG. 2.Board will include: 1.Director of Student Life and Student Integration 2.Director of Internal Affairs 3.Director of Public Safety and Housing 4.President (SG’s Director of International Affairs) 5.Active members (SG’s Associate of International Affairs) 6.Undergraduate and Graduate members 3.Michelle: Great idea! 4.Commuter Proxy: Will this council be for academic advising? 1.Fady Al-Banna: Council will act just like other Dean Student Advisory Boards and will include the director of UCIE. 5.Motion moved by Matt Johnson; Seconded by Jackie Kucirka. 1.Motion Passed(In-favor: Unanimous) 4.Herman Miller's Fifth Annual Student Video Contest 1.A FUN three minute video showing the value of online courses and education at Wright State.
