Prior to the meeting, Dr. Hannigan submitted revised course descriptions for these course proposals. During the meeting, Dr. Simmons presented an additional alternative course description for each of the three courses. Dr. Billingsley moved that the proposal be amended to include Dr. Simmons’ suggested course descriptions. This motion carried with a friendly amendment that the word “strategies” replace “programs” in the EDN 5470 course description (appears correctly below). The motion carried. Advanced Classroom Management. EDN 5470: This course is designed to develop graduate students’ knowledge base related to the theory and techniques of classroom management. Emphasis is placed on how those understandings can be utilized to establish a positive and respectful learning environment for all students. A variety of classroom management strategies are examined and evaluated. Advanced Foundations of American Education EDN 5480: This course focuses on the multicultural 21st century classroom and its foundations in educational philosophy and educational psychology. Course activities are designed to nurture the professional disposition for critical self-reflection and to develop the theoretical knowledge base that 1 undergirds best practices in the classroom. Emphasis is placed on promoting positive learning outcomes for all students. Effective Educational Leadership. EDN 5490: This course is designed to nurture and develop practitioners as leaders in their classrooms, in their schools, in their professions, in their communities, and in the broader society. The primary focus is on teachers as leaders in the teaching-learning process. Graduate students will begin their leadership projects in this course. MA in English Education licensure concentration Dr. Ladd moved the Council accept the replacement of the old core requirements (EED 5520, EED 5510, ENG 5000, EDN 5660) by the new core requirements (EED 5520, EED 5510, ENG 5300, ENG 5000 and EDN 5490). He also moved that a guided elective be added to the thesis concentration. Further, he proposed that the Council accept modifications to ENG 5000. The motions passed. MA in Physical Education – Licensure Concentration Dr. Thompson moved that current program requirements (EDN 5500, 5650 and two 3-hr graduate elective courses) be deleted and be replaced with EXER 5080, EDN 5470, 5480, & 5490. The motion passed. Graduate Policy Issues/Updates Discussion Item Dr. Billingsley, Chair of Academic Progress Task Force of the Graduate Council, presented and led a discussion of a possible special readmission policy for former UNCP graduate students. The idea is to establish a “forgiveness policy” similar to the one in place for undergraduate students. This policy would allow graduate students who have been dismissed from the UNCP Graduate School to petition the Graduate Appeals Committee for readmission. According to the proposal, former students must wait at least four semesters (not counting summer terms) before they can apply for readmission. The Task Force will bring other related proposals to upcoming Council meetings. The proposal discussed at this meeting will be brought back for Council discussion at a later date. Report from School of Graduate Studies Graduate Appeals Committee Dr. Simmons noted that the Graduate Appeals Committee met on October 4. Seven appeals were considered. Five of these appeals were granted, and two were denied. Pembroke Day Volunteers Dr. Simmons thanked the volunteers who worked at the Graduate School table for Pembroke Day: Drs. Danny Davis, Angela Holman, Roger Ladd and Karen Stanley. Grad Finale Dr. Simmons thanked members who have volunteered to work at the Graduate School table for Grad Finale on Wednesday and Thursday, as well, and noted that additional volunteers are invited. Catalog and website revisions Dr. Simmons noted that during the summer, the Graduate Studies section of the UNCP Academic Catalog and the School of Graduate Studies website were extensively redesigned and reorganized. Directors were asked to examine the revised materials and provide the graduate office with comments or suggestions. Materials for Graduate Council Meetings: Dr. Simmons asked Dr. Aiken to discuss materials and deadlines. Dr. Aiken explained that materials submitted to the graduate office must (1) be the most up-to-date version of the form, (2) have all appropriate signatures prior to submission (typically, this is all signatures prior to the Dean of Graduate Studies’ signature) and (3) be complete with coherent rationales. 2 The deadlines for materials were given as follows: • Teacher Education Programs - Thursday at 3:00 p.m. for both electronic forms and forms with signatures. As a courtesy, directors are asked to submit TEC materials to the graduate office electronically by the Monday before the Council meets or let Irene know of the information being proposed. • Others – Prior Monday at 12 noon for both electronic forms and forms with signatures January Graduate Council Meeting Date Dr. Simmons asked the group for input regarding the January meeting date (the third Monday is MLK day) and decided the January Council meeting would be held Monday, January 24 at 3:00 pm. Agenda Announcement Amendment Concerning the announcements, Dr. Simmons asked the group to note that the November 3 Teacher Education Fair was cancelled (per campus email received that morning).
