Alumni Spotlights:
Walker Brents III '81
To 1981 alumnus Walker Brents III, the “value of a liberal arts education is perennial.” He embraced his
Drury education and values the new discoveries it yields year after year. Before graduating with a BA in
English and Philosophy, Brents allowed himself to “steep” in great works of literature. He remembers
professors who, acting as mentors, allowed him to seek out and develop his own interests. Education is
“a quest” that constantly unearths new truths and perspectives, according to Brents, and that
experience is invaluable.
Today, Brents lives with his wife in San Francisco. He works as a writer and storyteller; he gives regular
lectures at Bird and Beckett Books & Records—a local San Francisco shop. His fiction appeared in
Amerarcana, a publication produced by that store in 2011, and he has published a book of poetry. To

Jessica Allison '08
Jessica Allison with her brother William Allison, a current Drury student
2008 alumna Jessica Allison says, "My Drury education has provided me with the research, writing, and
critical thinking skills necessary for success in graduate school.” After only three years in the
undergraduate program, Allison graduated from Drury with a BA in History and Contemporary
European Studies.
She participated in many campus organizations, including Mortar Board and Drury Ambassadors. She
received the Judge Warren White Scholarship and was the first recipient of the Dr. Stephen Good
Memorial Scholarship for study abroad. In her last year at Drury, she was named Outstanding Senior
Woman Candidate and Outstanding Senior Woman Candidate in History.
This past fall, Allison received a grant-in-aid to visit the Rockefeller Archive Center in Sleepy Hollow,
New York. To read entire article, click here.

Darline Dill Lounge
Darline Dill began her long history at Drury as the Dean’s secretary in 1957. After two years, she left to
start a family but returned in 1969. Soon, Dill joined the Music Department where she spent 37 years as
a secretary, friend and mom to Drury music students. “I wanted to be an advocate. I wanted to give
them what I would want my kids to have,” Dill says.
1974 alumnus Robert Lynn was one of Dill’s “kids.” He remembers her as a “home base, always there
with assistance and goodies.” She knew how to “keep students in line,” Lynn says, and always
welcomed them into her office. As Dill’s retirement neared, Lynn joined other students and friends in
finding a fitting honor for this special woman.
During Dill’s last year as secretary, students and faculty showed their love by dedicating the lounge in
O’Bannon Hall to Dill, providing students with a place to eat, study and socialize. This dedication, Dill
says, “showed I had a part in their lives. To be honored was beyond words for me.”
Current students make good use of this generous gift. To read entire article, click here.
New York City Alumni Trip
30 alumni and friends headed to New York City for a Drury Alumni trip in December 2010. The first
alumni trip to the Big Apple in over 10 years was a great time for all who signed up. The travelers had
independent time and group fellowship throughout the trip. All participants attended a New York alumni
event with fellow New York alumni the first night. Todd Parnell addressed the group and shared the
exciting things going on at Drury University. You can go to our photo gallery on the Alumni page of the
Drury website to see photos from the trip!
The Alumni and Development office will be offering the trip again so please plan now to join us this
December! We are tentatively planning to offer the trip December 5-8. The cost from Springfield will
be around $1450.00 for each person (double occupancy). $2250.00 for a single traveler. Costs include
airfare, 3 nights lodging, and transfers to and from the airport.
Please contact Brigitte Marrs at bmarrs@drury.edu if you would like to get regular updates on the trip.
An e-mail distribution list will be developed for interested parties. Deposits will be accepted June 1 to
secure your space (1/2 cost) with final payment due August 1. Drury will purchase group tickets to the
2011 Tony Award winning show that you will be able to add on to your package. Call your Drury friends
and let’s plan to have great trip to NYC in 2011!
