Texas – Oklahoma – Arkansas – Louisiana Region, National Association of Educational Procurement NETWORKING NEWS Volume 06 – Issue 2 March 15, 2006 _____________________________________________________________ Message from the President . . . It is only March, but we are in the planning stages of our TOAL Annual Meeting in Tulsa. The theme for this event is TOAL Renaissance – The Art of Purchasing. Steve Smith eloquently stated that “Now is the time to revive learning in light of the significant changes to our profession.” I wholeheartedly agree and I can assure you that there will be great learning opportunities at our event in Tulsa. Mark your calendars now for the TOAL Renaissance on September 24-27. We will be providing you more information on this in upcoming Newsletters, so stay tuned. NAEP will be celebrating its 85 year anniversary at the National Annual Meeting in Baltimore on May 7 – 10. This will be an exciting event with John Miller serving as the keynote speaker and The Disney Institute providing the closing session. All of the educational information in between will be excellent as well, including miniinstitutes on diversity and leadership, plus a live pre-proposal conference for an RFP for Technology Products, co-hosted by Mary Sue Goldwater and Dick Scharff. There will be plenty of celebration with a gala event featuring an awards banquet, formal dinner, and dancing. See the NAEP web site for registration and program information. http://www.naepnet.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section= Home We are pleased to welcome Philip Cervantes, Director of Purchasing at Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas as a new member to our region. Philip, welcome to TOAL and to NAEP! Nita Roberts, Director of Purchasing, at Baylor College of Dentistry retired in February after 19 1/2 years of service with the College. Nita, we hope that you will continue to join us at TOAL annual meetings…you always have a smile for us all. Good luck and enjoy your retirement! Take time to enjoy the arrival of the spring season. I encourage each of you to start making plans now to attend TOAL 2006 in Tulsa. It is a great location, and you will enjoy the program and social events that are being planned. I look forward to seeing each of you there. Carol Barnhill, C.P.M. TOAL Treasurer District V Board Member Director of Procurement Services Arkansas State University Report on the February 6, 2006 Strategic Sourcing Committee Meeting . . . The aggressive 2006 goals and objectives were discussed by E&I participants and a group of individuals representing member institutions. Although we showed a loss this year – TOAL members all gained from this opportunity to attend a professional institute at no additional cost to them based on our healthy bank account. The treasury is still in great shape with total funds of about $72,000. We will have no financial problem supporting an outstanding Achieve a 33% increase in member purchases Strengthen organization capacity Continue to diversify contract portfolio Continue government compliance efforts Increase and improve E-commerce solutions Develop a social responsibility initiative Improve benchmarking and analysis of future business opportunities The technology strategy team is soliciting for a desktop/laptop solution that hopefully will cover several manufacturers. Upon completion, we hope to replace the current negotiated H-P agreement with several 2 competitively bid contracts. A pre-bid meeting is scheduled during the NAEP national conference in Baltimore. BEST IN NAEP, TOAL Regional Purchasing Conference and Professional Procurement Academy. Another team, concentrating on scientific supply strategies, has developed a list of the top spend companies. Now that team is preparing to issue a RFP for microscopes, and will likely follow with centrifuges and freezers. Additionally, the team is researching chemicals and the brand Corning, in preparation for solicitations. A great rate has been negotiated at one of Tulsa’s finest hotels, The Renaissance, for this year’s event. The program is sure to be better than ever. Everyone should take advantage of this opportunity to learn, network, relax and enjoy the luxurious accommodations and the endless activities that Tulsa has to offer. In my opinion, members of the Strategic Sourcing Committee (SSC) are enthusiastic and motivated to get competitively bid contracts in place that serve both large and small institutions. Please take advantage of any opportunity you have to provide input to this group about your specific needs. Any information you might provide to me will be shared with the SSC. I promise to continue providing updates on our contracting initiatives. -Steve Smith, C.P.M. stevensmith@ouhsc.edu Tulsa truly has something for everyone.
