Supporting you through cancer
Apart from the support of your oncologist / haematologist who will advise you on the most
appropriate treatment, Southern Oncology Specialists offer a range of other services including
Palliative Care, Integrated Supportive Care and Clinical Psychology.
Living with cancer and the side effects of its treatment is often associated with symptoms that can
impact on how you feel. Irrespective of the stage of disease, a supportive and palliative care
physician can assist in improving ones quality of life and sense of well-being. This includes
addressing symptoms, including pain, nausea, loss of appetite, symptoms related to chemotherapy,
surgery or radiotherapy and link to other services that may further improve function and offer
appropriate support.
Dr Judith Lacey has been working as a physician for over 20 years. Over the past 14 years she has
worked extensively with cancer patients and people living with incurable illness. Her area of
interest is in whole person care: integrating care for people and their families living with cancer or
chronic illness that affects their physical and emotional well-being. She is experienced in working
together with complementary therapists, psychologists, other medical specialists and allied health
professionals to maximise patients’ care. Dr Lacey has extensive experience in managing cancer
pain syndromes, gastrointestinal and nutritional effects of cancer and their treatments including
post surgical long-term difficulties. For those requiring palliative care services she integrates care
with the relevant local multidisciplinary teams and supports inpatients as required.
Some other issues that are commonly experienced by some individuals with cancer, and/or their
carers and families are anxiety and worry; feeling depressed; feeling hopeless; panic attacks, fear
about the cancer returning; loss of confidence and self esteem; sexual difficulties; sleep
disturbances.
Ms Christina Brock, our Clinical Psychologist can offer practical strategies and psychological
interventions to address issues that may occur as a result of a diagnosis of cancer.
Christina can support you through common periods of crisis and significant challenges for
individuals with cancer, their carers and families, including the following:

Diagnosis of the cancer
Treatment (surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy)

Post treatment / remission
Recurrence of the cancer

Palliative care
Survivorship

General Information
Payments and Referrals
Payment of each consultation is required on the day by EFTPOS, credit card, cash or cheque. Your
account is sent directly to Medicare and your rebate can be either deposited in to your bank
account (1-2 working days), OR despatched to you by cheque (2-3 weeks).
A referral from a specialist is valid for three months only. A valid referral is required for
treatment, clinic consultations and inpatient visits by your treating specialist. Please ask your
general practitioner for an indefinite (or 12 month) referral after your first visit here. Without a
valid referral, you will not be able to claim a rebate from Medicare and your health fund, if
applicable.
If you are seen by your treating specialist as an inpatient, and/or you are receiving chemotherapy
at St George Private, an account will be sent directly to your health fund under the gap cover
scheme. This applies to the larger health funds, i.e. AHSA (including AUF, CBHS, Railway &
Transport, Teachers Federation), BUPA / MBF, HCF (Manchester Unity), Medibank Private and
NIB. For those funds who who do not participate in the gap cover scheme, an account will be sent
directly to the patient for payment. You can then take your receipt to Medicare and your health
fund for reimbursement. Additionally, self-referred (expired referral) accounts are sent directly to
the patient. You can find the referral information on your account / receipt issued at your
consultation.
Non-Attendance
At Southern Oncology Specialists, we aim to give our patients appointments as soon as possible. In
order to help us be able to do this, we ask that you give us as much notice as possible if you are not
able to attend your appointment, as other patients would like the appointment. A minimum of 24
hours notice must be given for cancellations, or you will incur an invoice for 50% of the
consultation fee, which is non-refundable.
Medical Assistance
If you require an urgent consultation and your oncologist is not available, you are advised to see
your GP or one of the other specialists in the practice, if applicable. If you are receiving
chemotherapy treatment at St George Private, all medical issues should be directed to the
Oncology Day Care Centre (Level 1, St George Private) on 9598 5310. If you are a current or recent
inpatient on Level 4, please contact the ward on 9598 5751 or 5752 and speak to either Cathy
Murphy, Oncology Practice Nurse or the Oncology Registrar. If you have a medical emergency out of
office hours, please go to your nearest Accident & Emergency Hospital or dial 000 for an ambulance.
Reports and Scans
Due to the high volume of reports received at this office each day, we are unable to contact you
regarding your results, unless an abnormal reading requires immediate medical attention. Your
oncologist will discuss results with you at your next appointment, where you may receive a copy
of reports for your own records. Administrative staff are not permitted to discuss results. We
encourage you to keep a copy of all your reports, which could be made available to other treating
specialists and your GP.
Due to limited storage space, scans (CT, x-ray, bone scan etc.) are not held at this office on a longterm basis. Please pick up your scans after a procedure and bring them with you to your next visit.
If you do not have a future appointment, you may leave your scans for your specialist to view, but
we ask these be collected soon after. Uncollected scans will be destroyed after three months.
We are bound by privacy laws not to discuss patients’ medical details, treatment, prognosis etc.
unless we are given written permission by the patient. We ask that the patient give consent to only
one family member, friend or guardian who can discuss matters with their specialist.
