PROSPECTIVE MEMBER PACKET
and APPLICATION
THE JUNIOR LEAGUE
OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE, INC.
Dear Prospective Member:
There are about 250 active members in the Junior League of Knoxville, and each spring we actively recruit
new “Provisional” members. Most of our Provisional members are sponsored and “proposed” by a current
member of the League. (* If a woman considering membership does not know a Junior League member who
could sponsor her, a person can be appointed to do so.) All Provisional members are required to complete a
year-long Provisional course which acquaints potential members with the workings of the League, its
membership requirements, and some of its community service projects. After successfully completing the
Provisional course, a woman is invited to become an Active member.
On behalf of the Junior League of Knoxville, we would like to extend a warm welcome to each of you
considering membership in our League and in the Association of Junior Leagues International. This packet of
information has been assembled to help you in your decision-making process. Enclosed, you will find:
1)

Please read over this information carefully. It would be a good idea to do this with your proposer so you both
understand all admissions requirements.
The Junior League is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism and to improving the
community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. We are excited about the Junior
League of Knoxville and its role in our community. This organization has over a 90-year legacy of commitment
to voluntarism and providing high quality training and education for its membership.
Whether you are applying as a resident member or are going to take your provisional course in another
League, we invite you to consider becoming a committed member of this dynamic organization.
Sincerely,

JUNIOR LEAGUE INFORMATION
MISSION
The Junior League is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism,
developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and
leadership of trained volunteers. It's purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
VISION
The Junior League of Knoxville will significantly improve the quality of life in our community
by focusing our resources on critical needs of children and families, providing a legacy of trained
volunteers, and building community partnerships to inspire shared solutions.
1.
What is the Junior League? A nonprofit, charitable and educational organization
of women interested in becoming effective volunteers in the
community. Members are educated about community needs through
membership meetings and study groups; they are trained in the skills
for community leadership through participation in League committees,
projects, and placements in community agencies. In these ways,
members seek to fulfill their desire for personal growth while serving
the community in which they live as trained volunteers committed to a
better society.
2.
How does the Junior League serve the community? The Junior League’s many
projects in the community are supported with both volunteers and
funding. League members also volunteer as board members serving
in community organizations and agencies utilizing the training and
education received in the Junior League.
3.
What is AJLI? The Association of Junior Leagues International is the international
organization composed of the 294 autonomous Junior Leagues in the
United States, Canada, Mexico, and Great Britain. Currently, there
are approximately 175,000 members. AJLI provides training,
resources, and networking opportunities for all of its members.
4.
When was the Junior League of Knoxville started and how large is it today? It
began in 1917 as the Girls' Relief Corps; it became the Junior League
of Knoxville in 1921. It has an active membership of approximately
220 active members, 60 provisional members, and 530 sustainers for
a total membership of 810.
GENERAL LEAGUE INFORMATION (Cont'd.)
5.
How does one become a member of the Junior League? Each Junior League has
its own admissions policy; each has its own set of bylaws. All Leagues
admit new members on an individual basis. Young women who have
an interest in voluntarism and a commitment to community service can
be invited to join a League.
6.
Does the League have dues? Each League sets its own dues structure based
mainly on the degree of maintenance and administrative services
required. Knoxville dues are $125.00 for actives and provisionals and
$100.00 for sustainers, of which $43.00 is sent to AJLI. There is an
additional $100.00 (non-refundable) provisional course fee which
covers all necessary materials. The application fee of $50.00 will be
applied to the Provisional member’s course fee. Monies raised in
the community are returned to the community for projects which fill
community needs. The League may not raise money for other groups.
7.
Can one transfer membership from one League to another? Members of Junior
Leagues may transfer from one League to another with all the privileges of their class of membership; i.e., Provisional members
transfer as Provisionals, Active members as Actives, and Sustaining
members as Sustainers.
8.
Does the Junior League take stands on public issues? The League may at its own
discretion take stands on local public issues related to its programs or
purpose upon a 2/3 vote of approval of its general membership.
Association procedures must be followed if a League wishes to take a
stand on a state, national, or international issue.
9.
How does an organization request volunteer or financial support from the Junior
League? Proposals are first submitted to the Community Research
Project Development Committee. After thoroughly researching each
proposal, they are presented to the general membership for
affirmation.
10.
How long does a member stay in the Junior League? A Junior League member
may continue her active membership indefinitely or until she is eligible
to become a Sustainer. At present in the Junior League of Knoxville,
after a member reaches the age of 40 and has served 5 years of
active membership or has served 10 years (including her provisional
year) if under the age of 40, she may become a Sustainer. This
means she continues to apply her League education and training to
old and new areas of community need, but without the direction and
supervision which the League provides to its Active members.
