APES REVIEW Ch 22 Hazardous Chemicals: Pollution and Prevention Concepts Most hazardous waste sites are not a result of malice; we did not know we were creating a problem. The Clean Air and Clean Water Act moved the problem from one media to the next; the problem was not eliminated because we did not eliminate the production of pollutants. To build a sustainable society we need to improve our ability to prevent pollution. Key Vocabulary Acute- a reaction that brings on life threatening reactions within hours or days Chronic- a reaction that that leads to gradual deterioration Carcinogenic-cancer causing Superfund-funding act to cleanup of potentially dangerous hazardous-waste sites Bioremediation-use of microorganisms for the decontamination of soil or groundwater Phytoremediation-the use of plants for the decontamination of soil or groundwater Brownfields-abandoned commercial facilities whose development is inhibited due to real or suspected chemical contamination Discharge permit (NPDES permit)-a permit that allows a company to legally discharge a certain amount of pollutant into the air or water See pollutant chart on my webpage APES REVIEW Ch 22 Hazardous Chemicals: Pollution and Prevention Concepts Most hazardous waste sites are not a result of malice; we did not know we were creating a problem.
