EET Workshops Implementation Name: Mr. Jerry L. Price Position and school: Earth-Space Science Teacher, Environmental & Sustainable Science Teacher Title of the EET Chapter on which you based your Project or Activity: Cool Cores Capture Climate Change Dataset(s) Used: Sample core 201-212 Tool Used: PSICAT ANDRILL animation Powerpoint Project/Activity Question(s): How does climate change affect what can and cannot live in the Southern Ocean? How do ocean sediment cores record Earth's climate change history? How do scientists record and communicate the climatic events that are captured in the cores? Project/Activity Goal(s): Describe how changes in Earth's climate alter ocean sediment layers; Analyze ocean sediment cores for evidence of cycles of climate change; Use the Paleontological Stratigraphic Interval Construction and Analysis Tool (PSICAT) program to create graphical models of ocean sediment core Use data from ocean sediment cores from Antarctica to tell a story about climate change throughout Earth's history Brief Description of the Project/Activity (What did students do?): Learned how to launch and manipulate PSICAT To build a core sample To save your core sample as a graphic or a PDF file Study the ANDRILL animation – understandings its implications temp vs time vs sediment Study Core Sample 201 Draw conclusions from the graphs and from the data To produce a Powerpoint presentation of their findings and conclusions Number of Students (With how many students did you carry out the project/activity?): 75 students (3 classes) working in groups of 2 Time Spent on the Project/Activity (How many hours or class periods did the project/activity take?): 4 days ( or five periods ) Your Reflections on the Project/Activity: How do you feel the project/activity went with students? The project/activity was very successful… Students learned how to install, launch & manipulate PSICAT’s product… They learned how to setup / construct their own core sample… Understand the significance of even a subtle change in temperature and its effect on an ice shelf / glacier… How to view and analyze a core sample What sorts of questions did student ask? What insights did they have? How proficient are students in using the dataset and/or tool of the EET chapter? The students were enjoyed working with the PSICAT product … they were even more fascinated by the core samples themselves-- How will you carry out this project/activity differently in the future? Yes especially in my environmental & sustainable science class..
