SEDIMENTARY ROCKS (NOTES) Sedimentary Rocks: all rocks formed when sediments are pressed and cemented (glued) together. Sediments: loose materials such as rock fragments, mineral grains, and bits of shell. Example: clay, silt, sand Detrital Sedimentary Rocks: rocks made from broken fragments of other rocks. They are compacted and cemented together. Examples: Sandstone, Conglomerate, Breccia Compaction: pressure from layers of sediment building up press loose sediment together tightly Cementation: occurs when minerals such as quartz, calcite, and hematite are deposited between pieces of sediment. It is the glue that holds the rock together. Chemical Sedimentary Rocks: rocks that form when dissolved minerals come out of a solution Examples: Rock salt, limestone Organic Sedimentary Rocks: Rocks made of once-living things Examples: Chalk, Coal, organic limestone Important Sedimentary Rock Facts: **They mostly contain LAYERS of built-up sediment. **They are the only type of rock that will contain fossils.
