October Nor’easter causes power outages

Hingham- the Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant spent the better part of Tuesday responding to power
outages that were caused by the heavy rain and wind gusts from a rare October Nor’easter. The
Hingham area experienced sustained winds of 20 to 40 miles-per-hour with wind gusts measured up to
55 mph during the storm that battered the South Shore.
A wire down caused by a tree on Hershey Street around 7:15 AM and wires down on Fottler Rd around
11:30 AM caused customers in the Crow Point, Thaxter St., Hershey St. and Lincoln St. area to lose
their power for about 30 minutes each time as Hingham Light crews dealt with the rain and wind to
restore power. These outages also caused the Foster School on Downer Ave. to lose power briefly
during the school day. “We have been in constant contact with the School department to keep them
updated on the length of the outages affecting their schools”, said John G. Tzimorangas, General
Manager-HMLP.
HMLP brought crews in early Tuesday morning based on the weather forecast for heavy rain and a high
wind warning. “We wanted to keep ahead of the problems and the storm, so we decided it would be
prudent to have some of the crews come in before their normal start time to address early morning
issues”, Tzimorangas added.
A tree limb on the wires at the corner of Cross St. and Tower Brook Rd. caused the customers in that
area of Town to lose their power for about 40 minutes during the mid-morning hours on Tuesday. “The
crews were also responding all day long to scattered calls from customers whose service wires were
damaged by falling tree limbs causing damage to their electric service”, said Tzimorangas. The crews
worked well into the night cleaning up individual problems as the storm began to move away.
HMLP serves 10,000 residential and commercial electric customers in the Town of Hingham. HMLP
continues to provide low cost, safe, reliable electricity to the residents of Hingham with a high level of
service and customer satisfaction.
