Solutions for Land Management and Sustainable Agriculture Based on
Landslides and Gullies Inventory/Risk Maps in Medium Size Watersheds
Description of the project offered:
The target area in Eastern Romania is one of the most affected in the country
by land degradation processes like landslides and gullies. Both land degradation
processes determine a very significant fragmentation of the relief and the agricultural
land, affecting the quality and function of soil, and making the application of
conservation and cropping practices difficult or almost impossible in places.
The identification of certain physiographic regions in selected watersheds,
based on landslides and/or gullies inventory/risk maps, other thematic maps
regarding soil, slope, vegetation cover, land use, etc. (all these maps obtained by
professional GPS measurements and GIS techniques), along with the long-term
expertise in soil erosion control and land degradation monitoring, both in the country
and the research center, will help us to provide the appropriate soil conservation
solutions for sustainable agriculture, adapted to each physiographic region,
according to specific conditions of each area.
The project will provide useful information to farmers and decision/policy
makers in order to insure increases in crop productivity, quality, and yield stability in
conventional and organic farming systems through improved practices for soil
husbandry including crop rotations, enhanced climate and environmental
performance of agricultural activities through reduced adverse impacts (e.g. of
landslides and/or gullies, soil erosion) on agricultural soils, and by application of
conservative land management solutions (e.g. optimum soil conservation practices
where applicable, wind/shelter breaks proposed where necessary, land reclamation
works or forestation where necessary, etc.), generally speaking, solutions for more
food with minimized environmental impact, in a poorly developed area, having
sustainable agriculture as the most promising potential, instead.
Project proposer: Cosmin HURJUI (Romania)
Partner role: Project participant
Partner organization: Research
Call for proposal title: Call for Sustainable Food Security –
Topics:
SFS-2-2014/2015: Sustainable crop production;
SFS-4-2014: Soil quality and function.
Description of the collaboration sought:
We are interested in collaboration with researchers or institutions involved in
GPS/GIS mapping and analyses of specific features/issues (including land
degradation processes like landslides, gullies, soil erosion) in certain/different
physiographic regions, in order to provide useful information to farmers and
decision/policy makers in order to insure increases in crop productivity, quality, and
yield stability in conventional and organic farming systems through improved
practices for soil husbandry including crop rotations, enhanced climate and
environmental performance of agricultural activities through reduced adverse
impacts (e.g. of landslides and/or gullies, soil erosion) on agricultural soils, and by
application of conservative land management solutions (e.g. optimum soil
conservation practices where applicable, wind/shelter breaks proposed where
necessary, land reclamation works or forestation where necessary, etc.), generally
speaking, solutions for more food with minimised environmental impact, in poorly
developed areas, having sustainable agriculture as the most promising potential,
instead.
