Wastewater technology at the Ruhleben sewage treatment plant in Berlin Berlin, 9 June 2011 – During an Information Day, the Berlin Waterworks presented at the Ruhleben sewage treatment plant in Berlin Spandau a comprehensive project to improve the water quality. Under the project name 'Oxeram', various state-of-theart process combinations for treating wastewater are being tested there. Three of the tested process technologies come from Krüger WABAG, Berkefeld and Hydrotech, all subsidiaries of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies. These are an ultrafiltration plant with polymer membranes, a microfiltration plant with a ceramic membrane and a micro-sieve. The project is focused on the planned fourth cleaning stage to further cleanse the wastewater with the particular aim of considerably reducing the phosphor concentration in the Spree and Havel and improving the wastewater disinfection. The interest of the Berliner Waterworks and the Water Competence Centre, which are working on this project, is in a thorough comparison of possible processes. The options are being examined according to the following criteria: first, the effectiveness of the process in achieving the relevant target parameters; second, the investment and operating costs of the plant over its entire life cycle; and third, the ecological assessment, meaning the consumption of resources and environmental emissions including the carbon footprint. The project is planned for completion by 2013. The UFlex ultrafiltration of Krüger WABAG which is being tested here has already successfully proved itself in many waterworks in drinking water treatment and particle removal. An important benefit of the ceramic microfiltration is its extremely high reliability and effectiveness. The Hydrotech micro-sieve stands out for its low investment costs and need for maintenance.
