The venture has been named “Momentum…The Rising Bunch”. There will be, among others, workshops, sharing sessions, a day camp and competitions to help students gain momentum in learning English; they will be rising. Objectives to cultivate stronger academic and sharing atmospheres among teachers and students of member schools. to enhance students’ English language proficiency. to provide platforms for students to participate in inter-school activities. to allow students to develop aesthetic practical use of the English language. to prepare students for local inter-school events of similar natures. Spelling Bees 1. Each school can enter 1-2 three-student teams (secondary 1 to 3). The Jamboree will cater to a maximum of 54 teams. 2. Entry fee: $100 per team 3. Two weeks before the tournament, contestants will be given 5 lists of 30 words; they are expected to learn the spelling, pronunciation and usage of these words. (a) one-syllable words (b) two-syllable words (c) three-syllable words (d) four-syllable words (e) five-syllable words 4. Three teams will compete in each competition. 5. The competitions will test spelling, pronunciation and usage. (Please refer to sample questions in Appendix I) B. Poetry Writing 1. There are two sections: Junior Section (Secondary 1 to 3) Senior Section (Secondary 4 to 7). 2. Each school can enter up to 2 students per section. The Jamboree will cater to a maximum of 100 students in each section. 3. Entrants will attend a workshop on: (a) Basics of poetry writing (b) Reading / Presenting poem 4. Entry Fee: $120 / student (The fee covers the workshop) 5. Entrants will submit an original poem within 3 weeks after the workshop. 6. Entrants will meet with adjudicators when their poems will be discussed and presented. 7. There will be 20-25 contestants in each competition group. 8. In each group, 5% contestants will receive a gold certificate, 10% silver, 15% bronze and the rest commendation. 9. An anthology will be compiled featuring the works of all deserving contestants. C. Debates 1. Each team consists of 4 speakers from any form(s). 2. The Jamboree will cater to up to 32 teams. 3. Entry fee: $100 per team. 4. Participating schools will send a teacher to a morning briefing session in July 2004. 5. Debaters will attend a 2-day camp (12 hours in total) in July 2004 6. Camp fee: $400 per student 7. Debates will be held from mid September to mid December 2004. The team with the highest score wins. 2. In each contest, there are 3 parts: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 * Each team will have 3 minutes to answer as many questions as they can. * Credit will be given to correct answers. * There will be no penalty for incorrect answers. * This part will last 12 minutes. * All 3 teams will take part. * For each question, * - credit will be given to the first team to provide the correct answer. - there will be no penalty for incorrect answers. - no second attempts by any teams will be allowed. The teams will have 2 minutes to figure out the pronunciation of the word and create new words with any or all of the 8 given letters. Example: Restaurant (sure, at, ant, star, eat, ran, run, tree …) Appendix II: Debate Competition Structure 1. There will be 4 speakers in a team. Two teams will compete in each contest. 2.
