Proposal Subject: (One sentence overview of the proposal. Examples: change in title, prerequisite and description of NUR XYZ. Create
new plan of study in XYZ department, etc.)
Addition of the second course in a two-course sequence to be required of all physics majors: Physics 43X, Senior
Research II. Designation of this course as Experiential Learning is requested. Designed for student's final semester.
Justification: (Explain the rationale for the proposed change.)
This course will be a three-credit experiential undergraduate research course to satisfy the Experiential Learning
Graduation Requirement and will also ensure that physics students experience a long-term, well-structured mentored
research opportunity prior to graduation.

Proposed: (If proposal is a for a course change or new course,
course information here. Include title, credits, pattern, etc. If

PHYS 4YXXX: Senior Research II; 3 cr (2-2-3);
Prereqs: PHYS 4XXXX: Senior Research I. Experiential
Learning undergrduate research course in physics
directed and mentored by physics faculty.
Impact on Students: (Explain how students will be affected by the proposal. Benefits to students should be listed.)
Physics majors will be required to have 5 credits of research before graduation. This new two course sequences (PHYS
4XXXX and PHYS 4YXXX) will give them this opportunity over two semesters in a structured, mentored fashion and will
also satisfy the experiential learning graduation requirement.
Impact On Other Departments: (Explain how other academic departments may be affected by the proposal, and summarize any
discussions with other departments about the proposal. If adding or deleting a course, explain how other departments may be affected.)
There is no impact on other departments as this addition is for physics majors only.
Impact on University Resources: (Curriculum changes affect university resources. Explain here how instructional, lab, computer or
library resources may be affected by the proposal. It is especially important to address the possible need for additional faculty.)
The CHM/PHYS Department has the lab facilities (internal and external), instructor & other resources to offer this course.
Impact on General Education Requirements: (If the proposal fulfills or changes general education requirements in your department,
explain this here.)
Since this course will not meet any General Education requirements for students there is no impact.
